GREENSBORO — David C. Wright, Jr., known as "Dave Wright" by his friends, acquaintances and colleagues, died on September 14, 2010 at The Oaks in Winston-Salem, following an extended illness.
Wright, who was 76 years old, was a life-long Greensboro native and a graduate of Lenoir Rhyne College, where he was a champion debater. He started his career with WFMY-TV, Channel 2 in 1957, after a two-year stint at Wright's Clothing Store on Elm Street, during which he discovered that words, not apparel, was his calling.
Wright's career at WFMY spanned 40 years. He started as the host of a children's talent show called the "Circle K Kiddie's Club," became the "Atlantic Weatherman" (with the familiar salutation "Dave Wright, Good Night"), played Santa Claus on the "Old Rebel Show," and held positions of News Director as well as Public Affairs Director. But he was most at home being a reporter, and his many documentaries and news stories resulted in his being awarded the Edward R. Murrow journalism award.
Wright is survived by his wife Kathryn, of Greensboro, N.C.; his three sons and their wives: David C. Wright, III and wife Sharon, of Charlotte, N.C.; Mark T. Wright and wife Ann, of Raleigh, N.C.; and Alan D. Wright and wife Anne, of Winston-Salem, N.C., as well as six grandchildren: Courtney Elizabeth Stewart and husband Matthew Stewart, of San Francisco, CA; Christopher Wright and Coble Wright, of Charlotte, North Carolina; Bennett Wright and Abigail Wright of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and Thomas Wright of Raleigh, North Carolina.
A memorial service is planned for Saturday, September 18, at 11 a.m. at Reynolda Presbyterian Church in Winston-Salem, where Wright's son Alan serves as Senior Pastor.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Hayworth-Miller, 3315 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Memorials may be sent to Sharing the Light Ministries, P.O. Box 5008, Winston-Salem, NC 27113.

I met Dave in Miss Lulu Gilberts first grade class at Central School. I was one grade behind, and we went separate ways after Central school. Dave was well liked and was always outgoing to others. Television was made for him to reach into many homes and lives. We will miss him.

We have such good memories of Dave on WFMY, as he was so talented. Alan, you have our sympathy and love. You were so kind to us when our son, Roger and his wife were killed in the ValuJet crash. Your letter meant so much to us as we grieved our loss. God Bless you and your family.

When a member of your family is as prominent in local television as Mr. Wright was, it must be difficult to share him with the so many who feel that he is family. I grew up with him, Lee Kinard, George Perry and Cordelia Kelly, and so many on WFMY, coming on tours through elementary school, standing with my mom during blood drives, and of course visiting on my birthday, going to the Old Rebel Show.
So, I want to say, to his family who shared him with Greensboro, thank you for letting him be part of my family.

I didn't know Dave personally; however, I remember him well from his TV career in Greensboro. (In addition to the "Dave Wright, good-night," I also remember him saying, "Marco, you're such a silly polar bear" as Santa.) I listen to his son, Alan's teachings on WTRU radio every day, and I never knew they were related. Both Dave and Alan have been used mightily by God to enhance the lives of others and increase His Kingdom. My prayer for the family is to feel the divine peace and comfort of God as they experience the transition of Dave's life from this earth to his heavenly Father.

Dave was a consummate talent--acting, cartooning, writing--and making us laugh.
I enjoyed the projects we worked on together at GSHS-skits, Playmakers, and a WFMY-TV weekly show HIGH TIME. It was an honor to know him as long as we did.

Mr. Wright came to my 8th grade class at Proximity Jr. Hight School back in 1968 to talk to us about weather. I simply called and asked him to come speak and he agreed. It was a big thrill for our class for him to come. Over the years Mr. Wright was a big part of my life in all of his capacities at channel 2. The family is in my prayers, may God give you all comfort during this difficult time,
