Davida Drewrey Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 27, 2025.
Davida Weston "Dee-dee" Drewrey of San Diego, California, passed away peacefully on April 21, 2025, after succumbing to a long battle with pancreatic cancer. She was preceded in death by her parents, David Hardy Drewrey and Josephine Weston Drewrey; her brother, Randy Drewrey; grandmother Katherine Weston; and her beloved uncle, Al Weston. She is survived by her husband of 32 years, Daniel Scherer, and their daughter, Emily Weston Scherer.

Dee-dee was born and raised in Wellesley, Massachusetts, making many beloved lifelong friends and memories during her times at Brown Elementary School and Wellesley High School. She earned her bachelor's degree from Springfield College and then her master's degree from Tufts University, focusing on childhood education. Dee-dee spent her professional career as a marketing communications manager in the medical device industry, organizing creative events, exhibits, and sales meetings for Codman, IVAC, and Eli Lilly.

In 1986 she went west to San Diego, CA, where she met Dan, whom she married in 1993. In 1995 their daughter, Emily, was born and Dee-dee retired to focus on raising Emily. She spent her time volunteering as a school room mom, Girl Scout leader, and high school theater supporter. Through her involvement she inspired boys and girls to explore their creative talents through art projects, sewing, knitting, photography, and performing. Her event planning skills continued to be put to use through creative birthday parties and Book Club meetings for her family and friends.

One of Dee-dee's proudest accomplishments was a multi-year project to renovate the home she grew up in. In 2003, she inherited the 1920's English Colonial clinker brick house in Wellesley and spent the following years updating and modernizing the home while preserving the original character of both the house and the neighborhood. Her intentional, caring touches can be seen throughout and she continued to stay in touch with the families that grew to call it home. Dee-dee enjoyed working with skilled designers, craftsmen, and builders to create beautiful things, with many considering her a favorite client and collaborator. She loved the smell of sawdust!

Dee-dee loved working with her hands to create something from nothing. She expressed her creative talents in weaving, knitting, and photography. One of her "happy places" was the Harrisville Designs weaving school in Massachusetts, where twice yearly she would spend a week in classes with "her people"-weaving, laughing, learning, and talking Boston sports with the instructor. Dee-dee often gifted her knitting and weaving projects to good friends and relatives; she took pride in selecting the right colors, styles, and textures for the recipients of her work, as well as hand-crafting the boxes and cards which accompanied her gifts. She loved taking great photographs of strangers "in the wild" who caught her eye and touched her heart. She had a lifelong love affair with her camera, starting with her mother's Kodak Brownie and progressing to her Rolleiflex. In later years she could always be seen capturing people and places through her phone's camera when the moment appeared. Her photography was recognized and displayed in gallery shows, printed collections, and received multiple awards.

With Dan and Emily she enjoyed traveling, especially to Europe, as well as attending concerts, theater productions, and trying new restaurants. After Emily entered college in Rhode Island, Dee-dee took up tennis - taking lessons, practicing with Dan, playing with her early-Thursday-morning friends, and actively participating in and coordinating a Sunday morning women's league.

She will be fondly remembered for her giving heart, warm creative spirit, and deep love of all things New England.

Please join us in celebrating Dee-dee on August 10th at the Thursday Club in San Diego. Additional celebrations will be held in Wisconsin in June and Wellesley this fall. Please contact [email protected] for details.

In lieu of flowers please consider a gift to the San Diego Creative Weavers Guild at sdcwg.org.

Dee-dee's family would like to acknowledge and thank her medical team at UCSD Health/Moores Cancer Center and her caregiving team at the Hospice of the North Coast Pacifica House for their kindness and care for Dee-dee during her illness.

Yesterday

A lot of shared memories from Brown School in the early 60s. Retrieving our blankets from our cubby holes for nap time on the floor while Mrs. Drake walked among us making sure we all kept quiet. I doubt anyone actually slept. Snack time with bottled milk and crackers. Watching the Mercury and early Gemini launches in the main hall. The cold mornings waiting at the back entrance for the doors to open. The dark day in November 1963 when we were suddenly sent home without explanation to find our parent(s) glued to the television. The field trips, the math project where we got to go on tv. We were part of an amazing school class. Rest In Peace, Dee-Dee.

My condolences to Dee Dee's family. While I likely only saw her once after college, while we were there together she was a huge spark of life. I suspect she remained that way until the day she went to the stars (as my granddaughters would say). Please know she was a positive force for many of us.
Sincerely,
David "Griz" Borofsky

I´m so very sorry to hear of Dee-dee´s passing. I had the privilege of being in some of the same photography classes with her through UCSD Extension. Her outgoing nature and sensitivity to people came out in her portraits, including with strangers. One of my favorites was of a smartly dressed gentleman sitting in the historic Union Station in Los Angeles. Not only did she capture some beautiful portraits there, but she found out he was a tailor and visited him later in his shop for more pictures. She had a way of easily connecting with people, and in class she was outgoing, insightful, and joyful. She will be deeply missed.

I knew Dee-dee through the weavers guild. I remember her as a great weaver, a wonderful photographer, and a generous person. I am very sad to learn that she has passed.
