Dawn Duffy Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 19, 2024.

Born: February 25, 1961 Died: February 12, 2024

Family

Dawn met John Duffy, the love of her life, in Milwaukee, WI while at Marquette University in 1981. They married in 1985 and shared 38 happy years laughing, loving, and adventuring wherever they landed. Dawn enjoyed coffee & quiet early mornings at their lake house, hiking, kayaking, live music, game nights, and outings with John, her kids, & friends.

Together with John, Dawn raised & adored her 3 children: John (Jay) J. Duffy III (Katie); Sarah A. (Jason) Jackson; and Jennifer L. (James) Zanayed; welcomed 2 grandchildren into the world, Eliza M. Zanayed and John (Jack) J. Duffy IV; and cherished their beautiful silver lab, Dublin.

In addition to her husband, children, grandchildren, and in-laws, Dawn loved and is survived by her brother Dale (Carolyn) Grampo, sister Dena Mendoza, parents Edward Grampo & Yvonne Kauppila, and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Education

Dawn graduated from Warren Township High School, Gurnee, IL in 1979, after which she attended Marquette University, earning a B.S. degree in Dental Hygiene in 1983. While at Marquette, Dawn interned with the University's Admissions Office, traveling the country representing Marquette as a student-recruiter, honing her public speaking skills.

Career & Passion for Life and Others

Dawn began her professional career as Interim Director of the TMJ Clinic at Swedish American Hospital in Rockford, IL followed by a 38-year career as a dental hygienist, the last 26 years serving patients-turned-friends with Dr. David Carlson, DDS and his friendly staff in Wheaton, IL. To Dawn, dental hygiene wasn't a job, but an opportunity to share the company of others.

Dawn was a born leader, a life-long student, educator, collaborator, and entrepreneur. While raising her children, when she wasn't practicing dental hygiene, Dawn was running several successful business ventures. Ultimately, after beating cancer for a 2nd time, Dawn began investigating natural healing strategies and the benefits of essential oils, turning her ever-present passion for serving others into an educational opportunity. She summarily earned certifications in multiple healing modalities, becoming a Clinical Aromatherapist, a Reiki practitioner, and a Reflexologist, using this knowledge to launch a public speaking gig, sharing her story, while organically cultivating a community of clients-turned-friends.

Throughout her life, Dawn was an active listener who engendered positivity while helping others find peace. Her fun-loving and easy-going manner were adorable; her laughter, infectious; and her persona was optimism incarnate.

Thank you for memories of your sunshiny spirit, love of rainbows on rainy days, and your warm, inviting smile. We miss you.

Dawn´s family lived in the neighborhood I grew up in. She was good friends with my sister Peggy so we saw Dawn alot. Dale was good friends with my brother Jim. I pass by your old house all the time and have thought about the family many times over the years.

I am so sorry to hear Dawn has passed away. What a legacy she left! All of you will be in my thoughts and prayers as you prepare to lay your beloved Dawn to rest.
May the Lord hold you all in his arms at this most difficult and sad time.

I met Dawn through Young Living, and our Raindrop Training, way back when... I will miss her contagious positivity and smile.
Another angel taken too soon.
May her light keep on shining through all of the ones she loved and who loved her.

I met Dawn through our mutual friends in the aromatherapy business. She was so creative in the way she organized fun interesting classes! I taught a class on Reflexology at her home. We had so much fun and enjoyed a beautiful weekend together! Her only concern learning reflexology was the toll oh her hands. I assured her that my style was gentle on her hands and very effective for the receiver. Right away she added essential oils and git amazing results! She had a wonderful way of nurturing others. She will truly be missed.

When I moved to Illinois for my first real job after college, Dawn was one of my first friends in my new home. We met as across-the-hall neighbors living in a big Victorian house in Waukegan, IL. We both lived in apartments on the third floor up some very narrow, steep stairs. In the winter it was cold and drafty, but we shared a love of sewing, and we each worked at making it warm and comfy. We often cooked for one another. I met her love, John, shortly after, and the two invited me to join them on some of their adventures. I often reflect on those days and laugh. Her infectious joy buoyed me along on many days. She was the embodiment of all that is best about our world. For that reason, I asked her to be the Godmother to my son, Tom. I will carry and cherish the blessing of having known her and send hope and comfort to her family.

My heart is so heavy but although she has gone physically her beautiful spirit lives on in each of us.

Dawn was a huge part of my life while living in Brookfield, WI. We each had three kids the same age. As young Moms, we would share homemade soup and salad at our homes before launching our kindergarteners on the bus and putting the rest of the brood down for naps. To this day, I cherish and frequently use her recipes. Her February mother/ daughter tea parties were legendary. My daughter and I have had fun reminiscing about those events. While my beloved Dad was dying, Dawn quickly stepped up to help care for my kids as I was at the hospital. I am a better person because of Dawn, and her memory will always bring a smile to my face. Sending gentle hugs and mighty prayers to John, the kids, and all those of us touched by her remarkable life. With love and gratitude for Dawn, Caren, Jim, Dave, Jeff and Maggie Groose

dawn and I had our first one on one in a canoe on Whalen Lake after meeting at WESOS. I remember the day vividly. She brought back my love of canoeing which my dad and I used to do when I was a kid. Dawn will always hold a special place in my heart. She supported me for years and also came to provide healing for my dad when he was on hospice. She kept saying what a gift it was to her to be of service to him. He truly loved her and the energy she brought when she came to visit. She will remain in my family´s heart forever.

Dawn's smile lit up every room she entered; her manner was always inviting; and her attention was always on the person in front of her. I miss her gentle touch, her adorable quirks, and am grateful for the way she loved me and our family.
