Dax Peterson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 20, 2023.
Dax Quinton Peterson, of Indianapolis, IN, son of the late Freeman Issac Peterson and Donna Marie Dale Peterson, was born on January 13, 1972, and passed away peacefully on December 13, 2023. He was deeply loved by his family, friends, fraternity brothers, and his classmates from Broad Ripple and DePauw University.

Dax was educated in the Indianapolis Public Schools and graduated from Broad Ripple High School in 1990. He was a proud Rocket and well-known for his athletic ability in wrestling and football, his lovable spirit, and his musical talents. Dax was awarded the prestigious Prelude Award for Vocal Music in 1990.

Dax attended DePauw University in Greencastle, IN on a full Music Performance Arts Scholarship and graduated in 1995. While at DePauw, he played football, sung in the Gospel Choir, and pledged his cherished Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Dax professed his faith at an early age and because of his zeal for music and his beautiful tenor voice, he sang with several praise teams and choirs throughout Indianapolis including Phillips Temple CME Church, New Wineskin Ministries, and New Light Missionary Baptist Church. Most recently, he attended Heartland Church in Fishers, IN.

Dax touched the lives of countless individuals through his singing, acting, coaching and gentle giant spirit. He performed in Porgy and Bess, sang for Presidents, studied music in Italy, and toured with 10x Grammy Winning Vocal Group, Take 6. Dax was committed to using his many gifts to glorify God.

Dax was an avid Colts and Pacers fan. He loved Indianapolis and serving his community. He was very passionate about the revitalization of the Old Northside where he grew up and lived by his personal motto, "Changing Minds, Changing Lives, Changing Neighborhoods". Throughout his career, Dax advocated for the underserved and worked for organizations such as Volunteers of America Indianapolis, The Children's Museum and Health and Hospital Corporation.

Dax's greatest joy was being a father to his only son, Zion Dax Peterson, whom he shared with his former wife, Dawna Craig Peterson.

Dax was preceded in death by his parents, Freeman Issac Peterson and Donna Marie Dale Peterson, his paternal grandparents, Raymond and Dorothy Peterson and Anna Mae Banks, and his maternal grandparents, Mary Alice Davis and Charles Edward Dale.

Dax is survived by his son, Zion Dax Peterson of Indianapolis, IN, his significant other, Michelle Pickett of Chicago, IL, and a host of beloved aunts, uncles, cousins, fraternity brothers, family and friends.

As an expression of sympathy, the family is requesting memorial contributions to support Zion's collegiate journey at Marian University. Gifts can be made at any Everwise Credit Union.

We sang together at Heartland Church for a brief period. That´s when I learned we both attended DePauw (just in different years). Rest well, my brother.

Dax was the first student I met at Broad Ripple when I student taught in the fall of 1986. He had attended Forest Manor Junior High, and my cooperating teacher, Sandy Mahurin Kishi, had taught him there, and introduced me to this new Rocket freshman. Dax was a gentle giant, and sang at my wedding after he graduated. He sang the National Anthem at homecoming; he was the lead in the Mikado; and he sang "My Prerogative" in a Ripples' act. I loved teaching him and watching him excel in so many ways. His death is a huge loss.

What an awesome psalmist! His voice was a piece of heaven!
Psalm 103:13-17
13 Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him.

14 For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.

15 As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth.

16 For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more.

17 But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children's children;
