Deborah Smith Brown
'Debbie'
Debbie Brown, age 69, of Charlotte, NC died Tuesday, March 17, 2009 after a valiant battle with emphysema. She was a spirited southern belle with a sweet and spicy attitude and wonderful zest for life. Her friends and neighbors knew her as 'the flower lady'.
Debbie was born on June 20, 1939 in Charlotte, NC. She was raised in Memphis, TN and moved back to Charlotte where she graduated from Myers Park High School in 1957. She attended Marjorie Webster Women's College in Washington, DC and The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Debbie worked as a Medical Office Assistant in the field of orthopedics for many years. Later, she helped many women and children while working at Charlotte Emergency Housing as House Manager and then at The Dove's Nest as House Manager and Substance Abuse Counselor. Debbie loved spending time with her family and friends. She was a loving mother and devoted grandmother. Debbie was a master gardener, having served as president of several garden clubs, and was known for her beautiful French blue hydrangeas. She had a special love for puppy dogs, especially her former companions, Buster and Pippa.
Her family acknowledges with deep gratitude the friends and caregivers who loved her feisty spirit, fierce loyalty and sense of humor, especially Dr. Kimberly McCrae, Dr. Kenneth Ferrell and all the doctors, nurses and staff at the Levine and Dickson Hospice House, Hospice and Palliative Care of Charlotte, and the Mecklenburg Health Care Center and the parishioners at The Serenity Church.
Debbie was preceded in death on December 8, 2006 by her son, Will Brown. Surviving are her daughter Charlotte Ferebee and her husband, Chris, grandson, Christopher Ferebee, granddaughter, Collins Ferebee, all of Charlotte and former husband, Charles Brown, Jr.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 21, 2009 in Christ Episcopal Church on 1412 Providence Road, Charlotte. The Reverend Verdery Kerr, The Reverend Jim Shock, and Friar James Dunn, O.S.F.C., will officiate. The family will receive friends following the service in the Blue Room at Christ Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Levine and Dickson Hospice House, 11900 Vanstory Drive, Huntersville, NC 28078 or to the A.S.P.C.A.

Charlotte, I will never forget the time I was able to spend with your mother and you at Levine Dickson Hospice House-truly an ejoyable experience for me. It's always so hard to lose mother, BUT I know she is now in a better place and will be watching over you and your family. I will keep you all in my prayers. Sending much Christian love.
