Deborah Counts Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 4, 2024.
Deborah Lee Counts passed away at the age of 71 on September 22, 2024, in Vail, AZ. Born on October 17, 1952, Deborah, affectionately known as Debbie, led a life marked by intellectual curiosity, service, and kindness.

Debbie grew up in Niagara Falls NY, where she attended 93rd Elementary, LaSalle Junior High, before moving to Hickman, KY where she graduated from Fulton County High School. She furthered her education at Anderson College in Indiana. She completed her Master of Science in Public Administration, through Troy State University, where she honed the skills that would later define her career.

After college, Debbie enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving as a Technical Sergeant (Tsgt) from January 1975 until June 1983 and was stationed at Chicksands in England and Fort Meade MD. Her military career was distinguished by her role as a linguist and Intelligence Analyst for the Department of Defense, where she contributed significantly to national security. Upon retirement in 2016, Debbie and her husband, Robert (Bob) Bevill, moved to Vail, AZ.

Beyond her professional and military service, Debbie's personal life was filled with joy shared with her family and adventures. She and Bob raised two children, Michael Bevill (Burtonsville, MD) and Megan Bevill (Phoenix, AZ). Her love for travel was evident in her meticulously planned 30-day driving vacations around the country, often themed around Major League Baseball stadiums and wineries, reflecting her spirited and explorative nature.

Debbie was a voracious reader, often reading up to 20 books at a time, delving into various genres that reflected her wide-ranging interests. Those who knew her appreciated her quiet demeanor, kindness, and profound ability to bring out the best in others. Debbie had a soft spot for animals, rescuing cats and dogs over her lifetime. Her impact extended beyond her lifetime as she chose to be an organ donor, leaving a legacy of life.

She is survived by her husband, Bob, her children, Michael and Megan, two sisters Susan Woodrow and Patty McCollum, and grand child Leah Bevill. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Helen Counts.

A full military honors service will be held for Debbie at the AZ Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, 15950 N Luckett Rd, Marana AZ 85653, on December 19, 2024, at 12:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to Make Way for Books, World Central Kitchen, or Planned Parenthood, organizations that reflect her values and passions.

I had the privilege of working with Debbie for over ten years. She was an ascended master of her craft. Her work made a difference. She was always the first to volunteer to cover operations. The world lost a great human being when she died.

Am so sorry to hear this. I knew Debbie during our time together in England in USAF. She was a great supervisor and showed me every kindness. She had a funny and biting wit! I will always remember her fondly and my most heartfelt condolences to Bob and her family.

I didn´t know Debbie that well but her sister Susan is my sister in law. From what I learned over the years about Debbie made me admire her for her consistent love and support she always gave Susan. I never heard a negative word from Susan about Debbie. I was so impressed with her career and the intelligence it took to succeed in such an important field. I thank her for her service and for the love she gave to her family.

I worked with Debbie many years ago. I still remember that she was great at her job and a very friendly person. My wife and I will be making a donation in her memory to our favorite cat rescue charity: Friends of Felines Rescue Center in Defiance. Ohio

Debbie was truly a good person with a heart of gold. She taught me so much on the job for which I will always be grateful. I truly cherish our time engaged in conversation about her many interests such as history and travel, but her real passion was music. She loved a wide variety of genres and we had many a great time discussing classic rock - from Aerosmith to Zeppelin - she loved them all. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her.
