Deborah Heckmann Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 10, 2025.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Deborah (Debbie) Kay Heckmann, who was called home to heaven by the Lord on March 27, 2025. Born on August 26, 1952 in Arlington, TX, Debbie lived a life full of love, kindness, and dedication to her family and friends. She was an avid animal lover, donating her time and resources in support of non-kill animal shelters such as Operation Kindness. Debbie was a dedicated mother and wife who was an amazing cook, loved the beach and music, and was fascinated by Egyptology. She had an uncanny ability to reach out to people during difficult moments in their life, providing encouragement through handwritten cards and personal engagements. The size of her heart was enormous as she sought to love those around her with reckless abandon, always striving to make people feel welcomed.

Debbie was preceded in death by her parents, "Buddy" Thurbert Stewart and Zelta "James" Stewart.

She is survived by her beloved husband, John Douglas, who stood by her side through all of life's joys and challenges. She was a devoted mother to her son, Jonathan, and his wife, Julie, and a cherished grandmother to their two daughters, Emma (who Debbie affectionately called "Memma") and Lucy. Debbie's love for her family was evident in every aspect of her life, and she took immense pride in their accomplishments and happiness. She was never hesitant to spoil her grandchildren and act 'silly' for their amusement. They loved spending time with their "Mamaw." Debbie's warmth, generosity, and unwavering spirit and immense heart touched the lives of everyone she encountered. She will be remembered for her quick wit, ability to make everyone feel welcome, and her remarkable sense of charity and kindness. Her legacy of love and compassion will continue to inspire those who knew her as her memory lives on with her family and friends.

A memorial service will be held to celebrate Debbie's life, where family and friends will gather to honor her memory and recount stories of the wonderful moments they shared with her. A Committal Service will be held at St. Mark's the Evangelist Church in Plano, TX on Friday, April 25th at 1:30 PM. Debbie's presence will be deeply missed, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her. Debbie was a devout Catholic who wholeheartedly believed in the miracle of the Gospel and Jesus Christ. While we know that our time with her on this side of Heaven has come to an end, we are confident in the redeeming grace of Jesus Christ who ensures we will see her again. "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this is not from yourselves, it is a gift of God - not by works, so that no one can boast." (Ephesians 2:8-9).

In lieu of flowers or gifts, we request that donations be made to Operation Kindness (Operation Kindness) in Debbie's name, as a tribute to her generous, caring and loving nature.

Debbie Heckmann was one of a kind! She only lived for one thing and that was to love others. I first met her when we moved to Dallas in 1981, and she was always so kind and so accepting. We moved in with our five, including our youngest daughter who had just turned one. Doug and Debbie´s son, Jon, was just a few months younger. Debbie`s husband is my first cousin, and I was so happy that there was family in our new hometown. They became frequent visitors at our home, and Emily and Jon are friends to this day.
Debbie and I didn´t get to be true friends until many years later after I had moved back to Kentucky, and at that point became a frequent visitor to their home. She and Doug were always so welcoming, and I was always a bit sad to leave, knowing we now lived so far apart. But that didn´t stop her from reaching out to me and showering me with her love, her concern, and her Jesus. I´ve never known anyone with such an unwavering love for Christ, and the courage to show it.
She and Doug never hesitated to take my son, John, under their wing when he moved back to Dallas some years later. I´ve never known a kinder, more generous and selfless individual than Debbie. My John passed away in 2022 and she grieved for him as if he were her own. I´m sure he greeted her with open arms as she crossed heaven´s doorstep. As I said, she was one of a kind, one who showered her love on others, never thinking of herself.
You left a hole in our hearts, Debbie, you will be missed . . .

What a kind sweet person.
I met Debbie the Summer of 1981 when my family moved
to Dallas. I was 15 and so excited to be at the Home of the Dallas
Cowboys.
I was always looking to make a dollar and when the Doug Debbie and
baby Johnathan stopped by for a welcome visit an opportunity arose.
Debbie was so welcoming and I really enjoyed talking to her. Even though it was the first time I had met her she acted like we were old friends.
The Hickmann's were in an apartment that needed a little TLC and after
a brief discussion of my skill set Debbie decided I was the perfect professional to help with some paint work. I spent several day at the apartment cleaning and painting.
I'm not sure my quality was great but even if I did a terrible job I believe Debbie would say it looked great and then fixed it herself after I left.
Debbie never stopped talking the whole time I was there and I may have spent more time taking breaks and eating lunch than working.
She was truly a wonder soul and I will never forget her.
Sincerely,

Michael Wigginton

Debbie was one of the kindest people I've ever known, and I will miss her.
She was my idol as a little girl - I thought she was so beautiful and glamorous (she was!)
Heaven gained another angel, and I know she is right beside her mama now.
