Deborah Huckaby Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 16, 2025.
Deborah Gail "Debby" Huckaby (née Schwan), 73, passed away on February 14, 2025, at Ava's House hospice in Sioux Falls, South Dakota after an almost year long battle with a "mysterious" disease.

Debby was born on May 17, 1951, in Aberdeen, South Dakota to James and Ruby (Walterman) Schwan. She graduated from Roncalli High School in Aberdeen as part of the class of 1969 and later attended the Stewart School of Hairstyling.

Family was at the heart of Debby's life. She is survived by her beloved mother, Ruby Schwan; her children, Sandra (Bryan) Carrier of Rapid City, Nicole Carrier of Rapid City, Trevor Huckaby of Sioux Falls, and Shaun Huckaby of Rapid City; and her bonus son, Robert Carrier of Colorado Springs. She was a cherished grandmother to Hayley (Dylan Savage), William, and Alexis Bohndorf of Rapid City; Cayden and Kyah Carrier of Rapid City; Noah, Lucas, Jonah, and Everlee Carrier of Rapid City; Abby, TJ, and Michael Huckaby of Aberdeen; Bella Cramer of Rapid City; Chloe and Zoe Huckaby and Cashlynn Stanley of Rapid City; and bonus grandchildren Jacob Hubley; and Ashley and Brittney McKee. As "GiGi," she adored her great-grandchildren: Sterling, Alexander, and Christopher Savage of Rapid City and Antonette Huckaby of Aberdeen.

She is also survived by her brothers Daryl (Deb) Schwan and Darius (Kim) Schwan of Aberdeen and Darwin Schwan of Arizona; as well as her niece Melissa Schwan and her family and nephews James, Eric, Adam, and Joshua Schwan and their families.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Dennis Huckaby; her father, James C. Schwan; grandchildren DJ and Raymond Huckaby; along with both sets of grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins who went before her.

Debby had a creative spirit that shone through in everything she did. From a young age, she loved to sew-making her own clothes as a teenager and later crafting doll clothes for her daughters with love. Her passion for crafts left those around her with countless handmade treasures that will be cherished forever. She found joy in family game nights filled with laughter and spent hours working on puzzles or getting lost in a good book. Above all else, she treasured time with her great-grandchildren.

Her faith was the foundation of her life. A devoted member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Rapid City, Debby spent Thursday mornings in adoration with Jesus. She prayed the rosary daily and kept a list close by for those she held in special prayer.

Debby's love for her family was fierce and unwavering-she was happiest when surrounded by them whether playing games, shopping together, or simply enjoying each other's company. Her warmth and devotion will be deeply missed but forever remembered by those who knew her best.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Shriver's Memorial in Aberdeen. Funeral services will be at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Aberdeen and Christian burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Aberdeen. Dates and times to be determined.

Sending love and hugs to your family! I remember carpooling Sandy and my daughter, Michelle Lefevre to Seton for kindergarten. Debbie and Gwenda Buckmaster came and cleaned my house for me when I was in bed with premature labor! We stayed friends ever since. So sad to hear of her passing.

My mom was one of the strongest people I ever met. And she showed it greatly this past year, with her fight fight fight. She wasn´t ready to leave this world and that strength inspired all who knew her. I will always remember her loving kindness and all that she did for family and friends. Her love for Jesus never stopped, and it taught us kids to also love Jesus always even in times like this. You will be missed mom. I love you so much. Until we meet again in heaven continue to pray for us all.

Debbie, was the sweetest and kindest grandma! I know she will be truly missed by all! She was so resilient I know when I go back to South Dakota and go to the park I will always think of her it was one of the most amazing childhood parks anyone could go too. Rest in peace grandma

I will always remember Debby (mom) and her awful driving in my mind. She was always the safest person when it came to taking care of us outside and inside the car. Just making sure she could merge into traffic but the car coming in her direction had to be 27 miles away from her just in case. She is always loved and cherished and will always be mom!

I have many fond memories of my cousin Debby who lived with us in Southern California before she met Dennis. She was like a big sister to me and we had so many laughs just being silly young girls. I didn't realize how special those days were at the time. She was a gift who always made me smile. I know she is with Jesus and her heavenly family. I love you cousin Debby.

I learned how to be loving and caring towards everyone. When I first met this side of my family, she was there talking to me and asking me about myself. The very first day I met her, when I was leaving, she told me she loved me. I was caught by surprise- I had just met her that day. She welcomed me with open arms and with the utmost love and affection. Every time I saw her since then, she told me she loved me. Even when she was fighting in the hospital, she always made sure I knew she loved me. If she couldn´t physically say it, she would squeeze my hand to let me know she loved me. She loved everyone to her full capacity.

I will always remember how loving and caring my grandma was. She was the kindest, most compassionate person I have ever met. I didn´t know my grandma for long but the time I did know her will impact me forever.

My first memory of my grandma is when I met her for the first time June 23rd 2024. She was so welcoming and caring when I joined the family.
