Deborah Meaney Sherwood Obituary

Visit the Legacy Remembers website to view the full obituary.
On June 28, 1969 in Chula Vista, Ca, Deborah Meaney Sherwood was born to her parents Jean and John Meaney. She left this world on August 1, 2022. During those fifty-three years of her life, she brought so much joy to her parents and to those she encountered. She packed in many achievements but most of all she did leave this world a better place by living her life to her own high standards.

She graduated from Hilltop High School in 1987 where she exceled in athletics by being MVP and Captain of the soccer team while also running the 400 on the track team. After High School she graduated from Fullerton State University and later earned teaching credentials from San Marcus University. She also helped raise two boys, Rainer and Addison, who inherited her athletic skills and who are now pursuing their own professional careers. And during this time, she taught physical education and First Grade at Carlsbad area schools. Those adults who have sat in on those classes have reported that she was a master in teaching and caring. No expensive, private school could have provided a better teacher. There must be literally hundreds if not thousands of young children who will have a life long memory of her and the many basic skills she incorporated into their lives.

Debbie, as we affectionally came to call her, was especially close to her older Sister Karen and her husband Jack, and Nieces Kyra Cornett and Nicole Williams. All of us will be having a private ceremony recalling all of the many happy memories of Debbie, trusting that this will somehow dampen our deepest pain of her loss.

A light in our lives has gone out permanently till we meet again in the next world. Please think of our experience as a reason to hug a loved one because we never know when they may not be there.

Thinking of you today Ms. Sherwood. My son was your student in 1st grade, and I´ll always remember how kind you were to him (and he is a handful). Hope you are resting in paradise.

This is absolutely heartbreaking, Mrs. Sherwood was my favorite teacher ! I was in her first game class when I was diagnosed with HLH/cancer . She would drive all the way to San Diego just to visit. She´ll always hold a special place in my heart forever.

She was such an amazing teacher. I had her for my 1st grade year and am currently in middle school. She will continue to make a change and make an impact on my learning abilities even when she taught me to learn, read and write in first grade. I will miss her so much it's crazy. I love how she did 100 years of school day, and dressed up as a super old granny. I hope she knows everyone will never forget her, and we even have a memorial for her in our elementary school garden. Thank you so much Mrs. Sherwood. You will be ever so missed. Sending love and prayers to you flying high up in heaven!

I miss you. Every time I walk by your classroom I touch your door to say "Hey Sherwood!" Your picture hangs in my classroom as a reminder and inspiration to be the best teacher I can be for these kids, as you were for mine. We love you.

Debbie was an incredible human. She was passionate, funny, strong and loved by all.
We met at the gym and were instant friends. A friendship that lasted more than a decade.
I miss seeing her face in the early mornings and hearing her giant infectious laugh. Everything she did, she did body. I miss you Deb! Prayers to your parents and those closest to you.

Debbie was effervescent in both her personal life and as an educator. Whether she was teaching PE, first grade, or adults, we all knew how lucky her students were to have her as their guide. As a colleague, she had so much empathy and support for every conversation and situation. It was like having our own personal cheerleader. Although I know her legacy will continue through the lives she touched, she will be so missed. My deepest sorrow for your loss.

Our whole family is tragically sad about this news. The love that she has bestowed on our whole family is out of this world. I have talked to so very many people in the community who are in absolute disbelief and share my feelings of her. She was AMAzING!! She had a special place in everyone of my childrens lives. Plain and simple we love her!! I know she can hear us, I know she can feel how much our whole community loves her! I would love to coordinate something were everyone who loved her could just drop a single flower on to her lawn. The lawn would be absoltely covered.

Debbie will truly be missed. Her smile. Her laughter. Her sense of humor. The last memory I have was watching her jump rope with her first graders. She was an extraordinary teacher and a wonderful person. I will always remember how she made me feel: welcomed, appreciated, and understood. RIP Debbie. You will never be forgotten.

I don't know even where to begin. When I heard the news I was convinced it was a fraudulent rumor. I just worked out with her at the gym two days before. She and my daughter (who was her PE student for 5 years at Carrillo) were poking fun at me as usual and Debbie was laughing and just so happy to see my daughter Sarah. She had to scoot out of the gym quickly as she had hiking plans with a friend. I said, "You're cheating on me!" Debbie and I always made it a point to hike and catch up on life. She was cracking up at me as she left the gym.
The very first time I saw Debbie was 17 years ago when I was dropping my daughter off at kindergarten . Debbie was out on the big playground setting up for PE. I could tell at that instant I wanted to be friends with her. I would start to chat with her through the fence when I would drop my daughter off. We became fast friends because of our love of running. Then the following year my daughter was lucky enough to have her for a PE teacher. Debbie was out on the field every morning doing the running club. Her energy and love for the kids was the heart of the school. Debbie was one the the best friends I have ever had. Never pretentious, always real. She helped me through so many hard times. She stayed in touch with my daughter through her college years and always wanted to know how her college athletics were going. I became a PE teacher as well and everyday I would try so hard to emulate Debbie- but it's pretty impossible. I will miss her and her red truck (she rocked that truck). My visions of her running with her beloved dog shadow with no leash! Our many hikes with our dogs . She LOVED teaching first grade.
I have lost one of the best humans in my life . I will see you again my amazing friend .

I worked with Debbie for over 2 decades and we shared the same hallway. I would go through her room every morning and sometimes share a funny story with her. She was energetic and had fun music playing. Her laugh was infectious and we shared the same sense of humor. Debbie was always encouraging both students and her peers. Debbie used playful activities to connect with all students. She was our light at Carrillo Elementary and will be dearly missed.

I miss my beautiful Aunt Debbie. I only have great memories of her smiling and trying to make others happy.
She gave me such a fun childhood and seeing her has always been a highlight of my trips home to San Diego. We spent a lot of time together at different beaches near Carlsbad, The SD Zoo, Legoland, Sea World, and my grandparents house for holidays.
I miss her sense of humor and I loved hearing her laugh.
Debbie was an amazing aunt, mom, sister, daughter, teacher, and friend.
The world is less bright without her in it. She is truly loved and missed.

I met Debbie 20 years ago at Carrillo Elementary where we both taught. We became great buddies quickly due to our love of kids, physical education & fitness. Debbie welcomed me to Carrillo with a GIANT smile, positivity & open arms! I moved from IN so it was wonderful to have met such a fabulous person upon starting my job.
Debbie was ALWAYS a person who would help anyone in need, stand up for what she thought was best for kids and ALWAYS put a positive spin on any challenge!
I am very grateful for the times we shared. My deepest condolences to her entire family am especially handsome sons. I am so very sorry for your loss!
