Debra Higgins Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 2, 2024.
Debra Jean Higgins entered this world on October 10, 1959, a spirited soul born to Louis Higgins and Carlotta Elmore. Second among four siblings, she quickly gained a reputation as the bold and adventurous one within her family. Asserting her independence early on, at the tender age of 8, she declared herself "Debi" - a name she embraced with unwavering conviction throughout her life.

Growing up in a military family, Debi's childhood was marked by journeys across various places before settling in St. Louis. Her innate musical talent blossomed from an early age. As a member of the Goldenaires trio alongside her sisters Dana and Janice, she showcased her vocal prowess nationwide. Her musical aptitude led her to be inducted into the Modern Music Masters society, performing for esteemed figures including Martin Luther King Jr.

A proud graduate of Normandy Senior High School in '77, Debi excelled not only academically but also athletically, shining on the varsity volleyball team. Pursuing higher education at Oakwood College in Huntsville, Alabama, she became a cherished member of The Oakwood College Aeolians, under the guidance of Alma Blackman.

Debi found companionship with Daniel Baker Daniels Jr. (Wanda) and during their marriage, they shared the joys and challenges of raising three children.

Armed with a Bachelor's degree from Oakwood College and a Master's in Music Education from Alabama A&M University, Debi's passion for music extended beyond academia. She lent her tremendous musical talents to numerous congregations and even graced the airwaves as a radio DJ.

As a single mother, Debi exhibited unparalleled strength and determination, ensuring the well-being and success of her children. Her unwavering commitment to her family was evident in their accomplishments, a testament to her boundless love and support. A self-proclaimed "Gypsy" Debi embraced life fearlessly, leaving an indelible mark wherever she traveled and on all who knew her. Her infectious laughter and captivating storytelling drew people to her, enriching the lives of those fortunate enough to cross her path.

Debi's love and impact extended far and wide. She is survived by her loving parents, Carlotta Lewis, Louis Higgins, and Julie Roots; her cherished children Daniel (Michelle) Daniels III, Diona Daniels, and David Daniels; her siblings Dana (Alan) Martin, Janice Higgins, Leslie Higgins, Shannon Higgins, and Japheth Higgins; her adoring grandchildren Michaella Daniels, Jeremiah Daniels, Amirah Cannon, Kieron Daniels, and Kayden Daniels; and a multitude of relatives and friends who will forever hold her dear in their hearts.

In her passing, Debi leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and a life lived to the fullest. She will be dearly missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

"Don't cry too long and don't be sad - tell my stories and about the funny things I did and the adventures that I had and laugh." ~Debi

I remember first meeting Debi. I was a new Christian. She and Danny had just moved to our town. And became a big part of our church. Debi and I were close sisters at Beth-El in Jersey City. We were in our 20´s.
I just found out today that she passed way. What a shock!!
I pray peace over her children and grands. And God´s grace to continue loving and caring for people.

My condolences to the family. Debbie and I talked and shared prayers and songs over these past months. When I reached out to pray for my sister in ICU she was on it but i did not know the stage she was in. We shared many laughs and fun times, I will always remember her smile. Thank you God for sharing her with me.

DEBI was one of a few people who made me feel welcomed when I joined SDA back in 1990. I remember several sabbath Meals, outings and play dates between our children. She had the most beautiful smile and calming spirit. She loved, laughed, and lived. I will never forget you.

I met Debra in a cancer group on line. Fighting the same battle I started a prayer group for support and she joined it with us. We prayed for each other in this group. When she shared her photo the tears feel because she and her smile reminded me of my sister who I had lost years prior to breast cancer. I often looked at her picture to be reminded . I and the other in our group will miss your company and prayers for us. Till we meet again you are well in the Lord. Blessings and peace and to all that knew her I pray the same for you.

Debbie and myself have had many conversations together at Berean and I don't want to go into details but our conversations were meaningful and clarity on things! I love to hear her playing the piano and when she gets excited bouncing up and down on the keys!

Third grade at FH Jenkins Elementary. We were always getting in trouble. Lol. Either talking or arguing. You see we were both very strong willed. I have always thought of Debi as a close friend.

Diona, Makayla and Amirah its difficult to put into words any level of comfort when the matriarch of the family leaves this earth and return to our heavenly father. Just know that assuredly she understood the assignment and there´s no more pain. Peace is her journey now, her face is your face Diona. Never forget the memories of her voice, laugh and the warmth of her tough. My condolences, sincerely,
