Deirdre Ann Carroll

July 16, 1961 ~ January 5, 2019

Deirdre was a force of nature - a fierce protector of those she

loved, a fast friend to all she met -

and lived life to the fullest.

Deirdre was born in Orange, New Jersey to parents Patricia and Thomas Carroll. Her family later lived in Columbia, South Carolina, where she attended high school and the University of South Carolina before moving to Seattle, Washington in 1981. She graduated from the University of Washington with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature in 1983 and remained a loyal Husky, proudly attending the official tailgate and Rose Bowl on New Year's Day 2019. While at the University, Deirdre honed her natural customer service and sales skills as a sales associate at Frederick & Nelson in their china department where she amassed an impressive collection which would serve her (and the lucky guests who enjoyed her impeccably-hosted gourmet dinners) well. Deirdre could accomplish anything she put her mind to, and this was evidenced in her rapid advancement from administrative assistant to successful bond broker at RW Smith.

Deirdre was a brilliant conversationalist with a keen wit. She was always up to date on the news of the world and pop culture, and remained a lifelong learner of history. Her unique and infectious sense of humor put people immediately at ease and she made meaningful connections with strangers and friends alike. She lovingly designed and cared for her garden and liked to travel, play Scrabble, spend time with friends, and explore her creative talents through painting and crafting, cooking and baking, and humorous writing. Deirdre was a seasoned Deadhead who attended shows across the US, Germany, France and the UK, and made many friendships along the way. She was at Sea-Tac Airport enroute to her first Dead show in 1990 when she met Bill Hanot, who became her husband of almost 30 years. The birth of their daughter, Cassidy Carroll, completed their family in 1996.

Deirdre was a devoted mother to Cassidy, her pride and joy. She chose not to return to RW Smith and dove wholeheartedly into raising her precious girl and tirelessly supporting numerous educational and nonprofit organizations. Deirdre was a volunteer, board member, and auction committee member and chair at Ingraham Preschool Co-op, Salmon Bay Elementary, University Prep and Showtunes Theatre Company in Seattle and a regional event host for Occidental College. She was also passionate about supporting the arts, especially as an enthusiastic audience member at Cassidy's piano recitals and film showings, but also as frequent attendee and donor in the Seattle arts community. Deirdre challenged Bill to become a true world traveler by visiting all seven continents, exploring almost 30 countries together on five continents on this quest.

In addition to Bill, her loving husband and travel partner, and Cassidy, the light and love of her life, Deirdre is survived by her mother Pat, her sister Eileen (Steve), her brother Thomas (Diana), nieces and nephew, a god-family, and best friends Laura and Candace, who can't imagine the world without her.

In lieu of flowers, Bill and Cassidy have chosen three nonprofit organizations that reflect a few of Deirdre's passions and principles: The Katmai Conservancy, Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES), and the Medic One Foundation. Any financial contribution or non-financial support of these causes in her memory would be appreciated.

A celebration of Deirdre's life with family and friends will be held later this year. Sign her Guest Book at www.Legacy.com

My heart goes out to Bill and Cassidy. Deirdre is a beacon that shines brightly and she touched everyone's heart that she ever met. I loved to laugh with her for her laugh was quite infectious. Deirdre is a big bundle of love and love never dies. Rest in Peace my friend.

My darling Ganglie Gangie,

I met you deep in the bush of Alaska where you were able to fulfill your life-long dream of seeing your bears in Katmai National Park. Immediately friends, you adopted me as your own and helped me along my own new path in Seattle.
One of my best friends since our meeting, each memory with you is full of irreverence, humor, joy, compassion, and adventure.
The tears of your passing are plenty, but the amount of tears from the laughter we shared will forever far outweigh the sorrow.
Forever my friend, and godmother, I love you.

Although I have had only periodic contact with Deirdre since she moved to Seattle, I have many fond and funny memories of her
growing up in NJ. It is a comforting memory for all of us on the East coast that we got to see her last summer in NY.
Deirdre could teach us all about how to live a life. She loved it all. Most of all she loved her family. Aunt Peggy

I am friend of Deirdres mother PAT and only knew her through her mom, I did meet her when she came to visit South Carolina and learned of her special yearning for our southern fried chicken, especially ChicFilA.I introduced her to pimento cheese ala SC and I gave her the recipe. In all of this my fondest memory was of her at her brothers wedding. She was on the dance floor cutting a rug and at the music ending she executed a perfect split, arms raised in joy. full of life and the best way to remember her.

We are so saddened to hear of Deirdre's passing! Can't think of a more fun person to have spent many an hour cheering for our girls at lacrosse or making crafty crap for school auctions. Deirdre's ability to make friends, literally at any event, with those around her was such an inspiration and gift. Our hearts go out to you Bill and Cassidy. You are in our thoughts and prayers. xx Stuart, Sue and Cali.

I love that you used the word fierce to describe Deirdre because she was certainly a force. I have many fond memories of our times together and wish we'd had more. She helped create the wonderful table cloth with all her cute art work at my "going away" party, something to this day I treasure.
My thoughts are with Bill, Cassidy, her family and others who cared for Deirdre during this difficult time.
With deepest sympathy, MG

Deirdre was such a wonderful friend and ray of sunshine. Outside of our laughter and fantastic times, she was a true, empathetic friend. I will cherish our intelligent conversations, travel, love of music, and silly ongoing pranks. I'm so glad that we met by chance a decade ago. Much love to Bill, Cassidy, family and friends.

We are so sad to learn of her passing. We will cherish the opportunity We got to meet you(Bill) and Deirdre in the hotel during our stay in Burbank for the Rose Bowl. Although we cheered for opposing teams we bonded like teammates. Our last night there sitting at the bar getting to know you, sharing pictures, exchanging phone numbers and Facebook pages was fun. I'm sorry we don't get the opportunity to build a deeper friendship. She lit up the room and was just so outgoing, fun and kind. Thanks for a great memory and prayers to you and daughter.

Dear Bill and Cassidy, Deirdre and I were born four days apart in the hospital in Orange NJ. My parents, John and Honora McGowan were best friends with Pat and Tom. John and Tom worked together at Western Electric. My mother and Pat were secretaries at Western Electric and pregnant with us at the same time. Our families spent alot of time together growing up and I have very fond, loving memories of Deirdre from those days - and lots of pictures that I will work to pull together for you. In the early 70s we were separated when Deirdre and family were transferred to South Carolina but our families remained close.

Our lives came back together in 1977/78 when Deidre's Dad died of a heart attack. My father died a few months later and Deirdre and I found ourselves sad/lonely/angry 16 year old girls left without fathers we loved dearly. I have not seen Deirdre for years but have always had a very special place in my heart for her because of our shared history and the fun we had as children and the comfort we gave each other as teenagers.

Please accept my condolences, my heart is broken for you both and the rest of the family. She was a great person. Give my love to the rest of the family.
