Delbert William Bannister, 87, of Scipio, passed away at 4 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 26, 2009, at his residence.
Mr. Bannister was born March 23, 1922, in Scipio, the son of the late Edward William and Ethel Kehrt Bannister. He married Lucille Hill on Nov. 27, 1946, in Hartsville. She preceded him in death on Aug. 25, 2001.
Mr. Bannister was a supervisor for Arvin Industries in Columbus, where he had worked for 21 years. He owned and operated a dairy farm for 33 years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Theatre, serving from Nov. 9, 1942, until Oct. 31, 1945. He attended Scipio Presbyterian Church and was a member of Jennings County Historical Society, Hayden Museum, a 50-year-member of Six Mile Masonic Lodge and a Past Patron and 50-year-member of Hayden Chapter 253 Order of the Eastern Star. He was a former member of Oak Grove Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed hunting, woodworking and farming.
Survivors include three sons, Warren D. (Linda) Bannister of Port Republic, Va., Roger W. (Stella) Bannister of Ruston, La., and Thomas D. (Joan) Bannister of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; one daughter, Marsha L. Cline of Seymour; his close companion, Wilma Richart of Seymour; 10 grandchildren, Patrick (Alicia) Bannister of Crossett, Ark., Julie (Jeremy) Woods of Minneapolis, Minn., Sara (Cameron) Culbertson of Harrisonburg, Va., Laura Bannister of Seattle, Wash., Tim (Beckie) Cline of Indianapolis, Joseph and Aaron Bannister of Port Republic, La., and Emily, Mary and Nathaniel Bannister all of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Wayne Bannister, and his sister, Pauline Shields.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday at Scipio Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Mitch Coggin officiating. Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Sunday at Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home in North Vernon. A Masonic Service will be conducted by members of Six Mile Masonic Lodge at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Vernon Cemetery with members of Matt Hester Post 2021 Veterans of Foreign Wars giving military graveside rites.
Memorials may be made through the funeral home to Oak Grove Cemetery Association.

To the family of Delbert Bannister I want to say that I know that your Dad was a good man I visited your Dad and Mom alot and they were nice to me reason why I know is because I was his sister's ( foster daughter)Kathleen Boling.Everyone said my name as Kathy. I"m sorry I did'nt come to the funeral when your Dad past away. Reason why is because I did'nt know anything about it until Andrew Gudgel told me at Walmart Store here in Seymour In. one day this week! Our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all durning Christmas and the New Year! I believe in my heart that Your Dad has went to heaven to be with Our Lord Jesus Christ Our Saviour! I will keep you all in my prayers May God Bless You All! Sincerely Kathleen Boling
