ANDERSON — Delbert Nakomis Simpson, 97, of Anderson, died Jan. 24, 2010, at Community Hospital after an extended illness.
He was born Dec. 28, 1912, in Alexandria, to Eddie and Minnie (Anderson) Simpson.
He has resided in Alexandria most of his lifetime.
Delbert retired from Delco Remy, formerly of Anderson, in 1972 after 30 years of employment. He was a member of UAW Local 662 and enjoyed camping, fishing and watching western movies on TV. He would never miss an episode of "Matlock" or "Wheel of Fortune."
Delbert had a great sense of humor and loved telling stories about his life.
Survivors include two sons, Larry (Irene) Simpson of Anderson, with whom he most recently resided and were his primary caregiver, and Errol (Janet) Simpson of Elwood; three daughters, Mary Jean Dennison and Aloma Colvert, both of Marion, and Ranola (Chuck) Spaulding of Gas City; 19 grandchildren; several great- and great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Richard Idlewine and Robert Bradley.
He was preceded his parents; wife and mother of his children, Thelma (Robertson) Simpson, in 1968 and another wife, Mary (Shell) Simpson, in 2001; two sisters, Juanita Vaughn and Violet Moore; three grandchildren, Rick Huffman, Cheryl Spaulding and David Spaulding.
Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Noffze Funeral Home, 501 N. Harrison St. Alexandria, with Mike Peckinpaugh officiating. Interment will follow in Park View Cemetery in Alexandria.
Friends and family are invited to call at Noffze Funeral Home in Alexandria from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Memorial contributions may be made to Community VNA Hospice through the funeral home.
The family would like to especially thank Carolyn Peckinpaugh, the staff and doctors of Community Hospital and Community VNA Hospice for the compassionate care they gave Delbert during his illness.

Delbert's passing has left a huge hole in my heart. The stories he could tell about his life, how his granddad was married to an Indian princess and many many others. He had such an interesting life. When your loved one is gone, a piece of their history has gone with them. I will miss you Delbert.
