Binghamton - On Tuesday, July 28th, our beloved Denise Lynn O'Dea passed away in Binghamton, NY from COVID-19 and complications from a 36-yr courageous battle with cancer. She was born July, 18, 1952 and raised in Hawleyton, NY. Denise's positive spirit and kind heart made those who knew her feel treasured and loved. Through her actions she taught the importance of family, friends, laughter, kindness, patience, compassion, and love. Denise devoted a 36-yr career of civil service to working with disabled adults in the NYS Office for People with Developmental Disabilities. She was an adventurous, inquisitive, life-long learner who lived to experience life and create positive memories. She enjoyed creating art, gardening, traveling, and reading. As grandmother, she delighted in taking holidays and long visits with her grown children and grandchildren. All who had the pleasure of knowing Denise know that life will never be the same without her, but the gift of her presence in our lives will forever remind us to love and live life to its fullest. She will be lovingly remembered by husband and best friend of 43 years, Kevin O'Dea; son and daughter-in-law Justin O'Dea and Lisa Bullard; daughter and son-in-law Heather and Chip Peoples; grandchildren Ember and Aidan Bullard-O'Dea and Kieran Peoples; brother and sister-in-law Doug and Joanne Eldred; sister and brother-in-law Maureen and Joe Schmitt; cherished nieces, nephews, and cousins; friends of her children she loved as her own; and her many friends. Denise is predeceased by her parents Henry and Arlene Eldred; mother and father-in-law, Millie and Jim O'Dea; and brother-in-law, Jimmy O'Dea. I met Denise at the Live Strong program at the YMCA. She was so kind and caring and helped me through a very difficult time. She would always greet everyone with a hug and a smile and made everyone feel special. She was an angel on earth. God Bless you Denise!

I had the pleasure of getting to know Denise as her supervisor when she was an Employment Training Program Supervisor. She put so much of herself into everything she did and touched people's lives with her sweet, caring nature. She would bring snacks in that she paid for to the Job Readiness Training she ran and I joked with her and told her after you retire, no one else is going to do this. She loved everyone she met and took the time to check in with everybody. I am SO sorry for your loss Kevin, Justin and Heather and know how important all of you were to her. Hugs.

Denise has been my friend since Justin was a tiny tot. The first time I met her she left a mark on my heart because the love poured right out of her with her child and spread from there. Denise didn’t dwell on the negative. She smiled through trials and tribulations and always turned the subject away from herself with concern for others. So many people from different walks of life knew Denise’s kindness. She was patient and smiling, always smiling and laughing. That’s how I will always remember sweet lovely Denise. God rest her soul.

I was so saddened when I learned of Denise's passing. She is one of many that I have known for so much of my life that I really don't remember when we first met. We used to laugh how her house was the only one I was allowed to walk to when we were young, because I didn't have to cross the road to get there.

Whenever I needed a ray of sunshine in my work day I went to see Denise. She was always so positive and upbeat, she brought sprinkles of happiness everywhere she went. So sorry she was taken away so young, my thoughts are with you in this difficult time.
