Dennis Gregor Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 5, 2024.
There were few days in Dennis Gregor's 81 years when he didn't feel like the luckiest man alive.

He filled his life with family gatherings, sporting events, history books, travel, tri-tip, bicycle trips, his children, grandchildren who called him "Papa Dennis" and much love, lively banter and adventures with his wife Lynda Gregor. He was able to enjoy all those things, up until he passed away peacefully in his favorite recliner on Sunday, July, 21, 2024.

Dennis Gregor was born August 15, 1942, in Fairfield, Calif., to Helen and Albert Gregor, coming into the world moments after his slightly-older twin brother David. (Dennis would later demand a birth certificate to prove this.) He grew up in Vallejo with David and older brother Mike when it was an active Navy town, and he always had great respect for the flag and a lifelong curiosity about American and military history.

Dennis graduated from Vallejo High School's class of 1960, working at Mare Island as a welder, then an outside machinist, sometimes on the same drydock as his father. One day Albert Gregor noticed his son paying attention to engineers reviewing a ship's paperwork; that night Dennis announced he wanted to enroll at California Maritime Academy, and in 1965 graduated from there with a degree in marine engineering.

Dennis met Lynda on a blind date in 1964. They were married in 1966, and remained a unit, "DennisAndLynda" (say it like it's one word, the second D is silent), for six decades. Dennis shipped out with the Merchant Marines until 1967, when his first son Matt was born. Kelly followed in 1970 and Scott in 1973. He spent two rainy years in the 1970s in Portland but spent the rest of his life in Vallejo.

Dennis and Lynda raised their family in the Somerset Highlands neighborhood, where they hosted pool parties, watched children grow, and walked a long succession of miniature schnauzers, at least two named Burgermeister. A major presence for Dennis in those years were his in-laws, Frank and LeOra Bingham, who enjoyed their grandchildren and hosted fireworks at their house every fourth of July.

His work forced him to stay overnight in the Central Valley (accumulating a legendary number of Marriott rewards points) but he attended every one of his children's sporting events that he could, then did the same for his grandchildren in Alameda and the Sacramento area.

Later in life he loved going to Cal football games with his high school and CMA friends (tailgating, of course), gathering at the Sardine Can restaurant to discuss politics, family, local happenings and sports - feeling optimistic about each new San Francisco 49ers season.

Dennis and Lynda moved from a big house to a condominium in their later years, but made sure it had a clubhouse for big holiday gatherings, and two spare bedrooms for their many friends and family to visit.

Dennis had a booming laugh that grew the loudest when his grandchildren were into mischief. He was occasionally stubborn, but always curious. He welcomed newcomers and looked for the best in people, even if he disagreed with them. He was a rule-follower who listened to doctor's orders. (Although his children now regret making him eat that gluten-free pizza with cauliflower crust last June at Lynda's 80th birthday party.)

Dennis visited Hawaii with Scott's family the month before he died, held his wife's hand many times in his last weeks and during his final evening enjoyed a glass of wine and spirited conversation with his friend Mel. He died surrounded by his favorite Tom Clancy books, dozens of pictures of his grandchildren and a new electric bike that had him dreaming of more adventures.

Dennis is preceded in death by his loving parents Helen and Albert and his brother Mike. He's survived by his wife Lynda, brother David, children Matthew (Andrea) Gregor, Kelly (Peter) Hartlaub, Scott (Gloria) Gregor, and grandchildren Olivia, Theo, Holly, Milo, Callahan and twins Madison and Nolan.

(Madison and Nolan, like David and Dennis, were born in alphabetical order.)

He is also survived by brothers-in-law Bill (Arlene) and Dan Bingham, countless cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

A service is set for 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 1 at California Maritime Academy. Hawaiian shirts and large sun hats are not required, but in honor of Dennis will be considered suitable attire.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate a donation to the Alzheimer's Association located in San Rafael.

I only worked occasionally with Dennis while we were both at R.F. MacDoanld Company but my memories of him was someone who always took time to teach me or others & pass along his knowledge. He was a great man who had many talents & was always patient & kind. This world needs more people like Dennis.

I had the pleasure of working with Dennis immediately after I graduated from college in 2009. He was truly an expert in his field, but what made him really stand out was his character. Every client loved Dennis, especially those who required extra special attention. He had a kindness that is unique.

I really enjoyed our conversations. I cherish them. When I first met him he had two questions; 1) Do you like football? and 2) Do you like dogs? It was a yes for both.. in which he replied 'Great! You're alright, Ashraf, you pass'. He'd quiz me on random things and the conversation would go wherever it went. He will be missed. My condolences to Mrs. Gregor and the family.

Dennis and I worked together at RF MacDonald Co in Modesto. He was always a pleasure to be around . I remember him talking about his wife calling her Mrs Gregor and also referring to her as his first wife. I looked up to Dennis as he often reminded me of my own father. Kind, gentle and genuine. I remember his stories about going for a bike ride and setting in trouble if he fell. I am extremely saddened with his passing and want to extend my sympathy to Mrs Gregor and his children . I was hired to replace Dennis at RFM. Early on I road with him a lot. During the holidays I saw a large gift basket in his car. I asked "Dennis what customer is that for?" He said "it´s for me from the hotel." He stayed at the same 3-4 days per week for over 15years.

Dennis and my paths crossed a few times at various workplaces since when I was a year behind him at CMA. He was always enthusiastic to see you again and help with whatever, a person you would want on your watch. He will be missed. Our condolences to the family. Bill and Mary Lou Keyworth

We are saddened to hear of Dennis´s passing. He was our neighbor for many years in Hiddenbrooke in Vallejo. We would always chat about our dogs and he and Lynda were the nicest people you could have as neighbors. When they moved to their condo Dennis still continued to bike all over town. Our condolences to the family. Beth and Allan Yeap

Gramps Gregor was a classmate at CMA from August of 1962 until July 1965. We both graduated just in time to man ships for the Vietnam War sealift to supply war materials for our troops. He became a family man and switched careers becoming a boiler expert. We again were in the same industry as boiler experts. He worked for a manufacturer. I worked for a company who manufactured boiler equipment. As a man Dennis (aka Gramps) was a friend, a devoted husband, an expert in his own right in anything he put his mind to. We old timers from the class of 1965 plus so many others will miss his humor and friendship. May he rest in peace

I have known Dennis since our first day at CMA, which was an August morning on the "grinder" in 1962. Dennis and I were in the same division throughout our 3 years at the academy. As was the norm in those days, everybody was annointed with a moniker. Dennis, due to his advanced age, became "Gramps"!
After graduation we all "drifted" away to the 7 seas! It wasn't until 1992 when we moved to Sonoma from the East Coast that we reunited with Dennis, Brian Maxwell and Dick "Twig" Branch. We started getting together quarterly, with wives, for social events that continued untl 2019. Maxwell and I both left the "wokeness" of California for Oregon and Idaho, respectively. We thought our social gathering days were over. Not so! Dennis and the others were keen on visiting Idaho so we started a tradition od gathering at my place in Eagle for the 4th of July weekend. We would participat is the local parade with a WWII Jeep I'd borrow from the Warhaqwk Museum. This lasted until 2013, which was our last gathering. Fair winds and following seas, Dennis! Until we meet again!

I too remember Dennis telling us new 4th class midshipmen about how his friends and him invented frisbee up in the old residential hall at CMA! Some of my fondest memories from CMA were divisional pool parties at Dennis and Lynda´s home at the end of Georgia Street. It was always a nice escape from academy life. Over the years, I had many conversations with Dennis typically related to some technical issue. He always had a way of breaking them down and suggesting a simple solution that was typically hilarious. Another fond memory I have of Dennis is from years ago when his son Scott and I had boats next to one another at the Vallejo Yacht Club. Dennis would often take a picture of our two boats during his frequent bike rides along the water front. He would then send these pictures to Scott and I. I always appreciated Dennis sending those pictures. It was nice to know that someone was keeping an eye on the boats and often offered a bit of an escape for me to more enjoyable times as I was typically working on the road in some not so enjoyable place. Thank you Dennis for all the great memories. You will be greatly missed.

Dennis was always nice to me, but gave me a hard time because I didn't like to watch news about politics. We loved him and have fond memories of are vacations together. Whoever gets his car needs to know it hasn't been driven over 60 miles a hour. We will miss his phone calls and vactions.

I remember Dennis telling me a story that he and his friends invented the frisbee. They actually called it the "hey catch this game" he told me. I was just 18 and new to Cal Maritime so I believed him:). Scott Dennis and Lynda took care of me when I went there and this Wyoming boy really appreciated it. Thanks Dennis! You will be missed.
