Dennis Timothy McCarthy, born November 14, 1946 in Yonkers, New York, passed away on July 14, 2025 at the Veteran's Affairs hospital in West Haven, Connecticut, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Dennis' life was one of accomplishment, love and service. He grew up in Yonkers, New York, attending Christ the King School and Gorton High School before entering the Air Force Academy, graduating in 1969. Dennis proudly served his country as a C-130 pilot in Vietnam. He loved sharing tales from his time in the Air Force and imparted the traditions, songs and football cheers to his family and friends.
After the Air Force, Dennis became an oil trader and broker, first for Mobile Oil, then Bruggemann before starting his own business with Caden Commodities which merged with First National Oil Brokers in 1990. He retired in 2015 and spent his time playing countless rounds of golf and keeping up with his busy kids and grandkids, keeping them up way past bedtime watching all the latest movies and introducing them to favorites like The Godfather.
Dennis' true love was his family. He met Deborah (Wood) McCarthy in seventh grade, marrying her in 1969. They spent the next 56 years happily bickering with each other, and raising their children, Taryn, Kerry and Riley. "Club McCarthy" was always the gathering spot for friends and family. Debbie and Dennis hosted many parties on the back patio on Pear Tree Point Road spending hours gabbing and reminiscing. Later on, the yard in Lordship was the site for many pool parties, family wiffle ball games, and happy hour putting contests overlooking the Long Island Sound. A core family memory was the Army-Air Force game which started as an inter-family rivalry between Dennis' father (an Army Veteran) and Dennis. The tradition grew from a family trip to Colorado in 1965 to party buses of friends and family caravanning up to West Point chanting and cheering "Let's See the Mule Fly".
His second love was golf. He was lucky enough to play many top courses in the world and proudly scored five holes in one over his lifetime. He was a longtime member at Silvermine Golf Club before moving to Florida where he was an active member at the Longboat Key Club. He imparted the love of the game to his children and grandchildren and anyone who ever played with Dennis will never forget his famous 10-foot gimme putts and endless supply of mulligans.
Dennis was a long-time resident of Stratford, Connecticut and
Longboat Key, Florida, and formerly of Darien, CT. He was 78 years old. Dennis was predeceased by his sister Gail Fennell (2025), his mother Frances Alberta Wilmot McCarthy (2010) and his father, Vincent Timothy McCarthy (2005). He is survived by his wife, Deborah (Wood) McCarthy, his children, Taryn McCarthy, Kerry McCarthy (Shaikh Rasool) and Riley McCarthy (Will Hopkins); his grandchildren Marley McCarthy, Osgood McCarthy, Charlie Rasool, Rory Rasool and Welles Hopkins; sister Diane Rutledge, beloved brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends. His life was centered around the joy his family brought to him.
A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, August 1, 2025 at Indian Harbor Yacht Club from 12 - 3 pm. Donations in Dennis' memory may be made to the Connecticut Veteran's Association Hospital where he received wonderful and compassionate care, or to the First Tee of Sarasota, to instill the love of golf in future generations.
