Dennis Serras Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 1, 2019.
Dennis T. Serras, of Ann Arbor, MI, died on January 30, 2019, at his residence with his loving family by his side. Dennis was born in Schenectady, NY in 1946. The second son to Greek-immigrant parents Louis and Dena Serras, he is survived by his wife Ellie, daughters Alisha and Niki and siblings LeGrande, Andrea and John, six nieces, and two nephews. Dennis grew up working in the family restaurant in New York, so when he moved with his brother LeGrande to Ann Arbor in 1965, it came as no surprise that he started working in restaurants, finding a mentor in Chuck Muer. The Real Seafood Company, Serras' first restaurant opened in 1975, he was 28 yrs. old. In 1977, his life changed forever when he met Ellie (Pacetti). They were married in 1979 and had two daughters Alisha and Niki. With Ellie by his side, Dennis went on to open many more restaurants under the umbrella of Mainstreet Ventures which he founded in 1979. He can be credited for helping create the 'food scene' in downtown Ann Arbor, especially on Main Street. Serras was an active volunteer and supporter of many community organizations including University Musical Society (UMS), Main Street Area Association (MSAA), founding member of the Michigan Medicine Patient Family Advisory Committee (PFAC), Soup Kitchen Del Ray, Cancer Center University of Michigan, Depression Center University of Michigan, The Neutral Zone, Summer Festival, Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation, Dawn Farm and many more. Dennis' vision of collaborating with nonprofits for a better community is a model for sustaining both profit and nonprofit organizations. Mainstreet Ventures and the Serras family continue to be known for its generosity throughout this community. "Dennis was a trendsetter and a vision actualizer. He was the quintessential entrepreneur, combining an awareness of community needs with business acumen. His idea of good business practice is filled with vision and a commitment to the overall good of the neighborhood and community" in the words of Ken Fischer spoken at an event honoring Dennis and Ellie. And then there's the private Dennis who excelled at every "hobby" that caught his attention. He was an avid golfer and fisherman; he collected muscle cars from the 60's; he was a private pilot and achieved the highest certification to fly pressurized multi-engine planes; he was recognized by the United States Coast Guard as a Merchant Marine Captain and operated a 60' yacht; he played high stakes poker tournaments all over world; he was the general contractor of the family home in Ann Arbor, which is an homage to Frank Lloyd Wright's prairie style concept; he was the best friend one could ever hope for; he never minced words; he had a full sense of humor; loved food; mostly though, he loved his family more than anything else in his life and consistently expressed his love for his daughters and wife. Dennis lived by two mottos: "If it's worth doing it's worth abusing" and "May you live as long as you love and love as long as you live" He accomplished both. Visitation will be Friday, February 1st at Nie Funeral Home, 3767 W Liberty Rd, Ann Arbor, MI 48103 from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. with a Trisagion service with Father Nick Kotsis at 8 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, February 2nd at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 3109 Scio Church Rd, Ann Arbor, MI 48103. Burial immediately following the church service at Forest Hill Cemetery, 415 Observatory St, Ann Arbor, MI 48104.

Dennis was a great guy with whom I shared some good times as a kid and as a young man. He had a great heart and cared deeply about a lot of people. He came across as strong and macho but below that he really was a very caring person and I apprceiate the times we had together. My best to his wife and daughters and family. i am sure Dennis is having a ball upstairs running a lot of things. All the best, sam rosenberg

I'm so sorry and shocked - I didn't know he had passed. He was a great friend and buddy. We used to talk for hours in Naples when he was there. Smart, personable, loyal friend and would do anything for you. My deepest of sympathy and love to the family. Dan Ressler

A small office supply owner on Ann Arbor's west side, me, was always in admiration of the Serras family and their team of restaurants. They were a major chapter of the Quality of Life in Ann Arbor. Not sure we formally met, but if not, I felt like we were close friends.

I am sorry to hear about Dennis. I always thought he was a very influential man, and in reading these tributes, my suspicions were confirmed.
I loved seeing him in the summer strolling down Main Street, presumably checking out all his fine establishments. I also loved playing the "Dennis card" as he would get me to the front of the line on many a busy night. He was a generous man and will be missed.
May his memory be eternal.

Dennis was such a wonderful and very giving man. He bravely modeled for my Relay For Life team's calendar, The Brave Men of Dexter and Beyond, and he generously supported our team in reaching our goal. Thank you Dennis for all you did for us. You will be missed!

We were really sad to hear about Dennis. Ellie, we know that you and your family have wonderful memories to cherish and to help sustain you. You're in our thoughts. We loved reading others' memories of Maudes which was always one of our favorites as well!

I was a best friend of Denni from 1970 thru 1980 when I moved to Denver and kinda lost track of my friend and mentor. We did everything together and it's so sad when life gets in the way of our dear friendships. He was instrumental in my development as a chef, in the meeting of my lovely wife Bonnie 37 yrs.and of course when he met and married Ellie.I was deeply saddened when I heard the news of his passing as it was after the funeral, so my prayers and sympathy goes out to his loving. Family. Dennis I'll see you again.

I was so sad to hear this news. Dennis was such a joy to work for in my years at Maudes and Arribas. I remember one night he came through the back to have dinner at Maudes and saw a bread pudding I had made the staff and when he was done eating told his waiter I'll have some of the bread pudding in the back for dessert. Told me it was the best he had eaten. Thoughts are with the family as they make it through this transition. ❤ Sandi Richards Hamill

My 84 year old dad living in FL was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in in 2012. Though surgery was successful, he suffered post-op syndromes many patients experience. Through a prompt from Ellie, Dennis reached out to my dad long distance to talk through getting past those tough times. When my father visited Michigan in 2016, Dennis was kind enough to meet us and made the connection with my dad personal. I will always be grateful to Dennis for his kindness, humility and spirit. My heartfelt condolences to Ellie and her family.

I was an "opening" employee (bartender) at Maude's Restaurant in 1977 and continued until 1985. Those were the days! I now live in California but return each year to Ann Arbor to visit friends, and family in Jackson. In July 2018, Toni Carlbom (late husband Eddie) and I were having a lovely lunch on the street at Gratzi and talked about those days in Ann Arbor and specifically Dennis with the restaurants. As we left our table and walked down the street who appeared in front of us but Dennis! It had been over 30 years! We talked for a long time, it was great to see him and catch up. With loving thoughts and sympathy to Ellie and his family. Jennifer & Toni

Dennis gave my step-son, Bob, his start in the food service business at Maude's, for which I will always be grateful. Bob has gone on to rise to district manager at one of the largest corporate catering firms in the country. I know there are many people who can tell the same story, which is to Dennis' credit. Dennis, Ellie, and Main Street Ventures have given so much to our community. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
