Denny Ofstedahl Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 1, 2025.
Dennis (Denny) John Ofstedahl, age 71, passed away peacefully on December 28, 2024, with his loving family by his side.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Linda (Picht) Ofstedahl; his three daughters, Jessica Franco, Abigail (Wes Rivers) Ofstedahl, and Paige (Andrew) Knight; and his six grandchildren: Elianna and Esmé Franco; Seraphina and Andreas Rivers; and Maren and Jade Knight. Denny is also survived by his siblings Joan Beecken and Eric Ofstedahl. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Dorothy Ofstedahl, and brother-in-law Dave Beecken.

Denny was born on February 1st, 1953 and grew up on a dairy farm in Holmen, Wisconsin. It was a family affair, with his siblings and cousins spending their formative years together milking cows, tending the fields, and finding respite in the creek hollows. Denny was active in 4H, participated in wrestling, played the trombone, and sang in choir.

Denny graduated from Holmen High School in 1971 and went on to attend Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. His studies included a year at Hothorpe Hall in England. He graduated in 1976 with a Bachelor's Degree in Religion and Psychology. Shortly after, he started working for Mississippi Valley Airlines in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, where he met his wife, Linda. The two were married on August 22, 1981, in Iowa Falls, Iowa.

The couple began their life together in Moline, Illinois, where they welcomed their first daughter, Jessica. They later moved to Appleton, Wisconsin, where they both worked for Air Wisconsin Airlines and welcomed their second daughter, Abigail. In total, Denny and Linda worked together in the airline industry for 12 years.

In 1989, the family settled in Apple Valley, Minnesota - a place they would call home for the next 35 years - and welcomed their youngest daughter, Paige. Denny worked for Mesaba Airlines for 23 years and then Endeavor Airlines for the past 11 years. Overall, Denny spent over four decades in the airline industry, dedicating his career to airline safety and evaluation and becoming a friend and mentor to many.

At home and in his community, Denny enjoyed gardening, reading, photography, and stayed active by refereeing soccer games, running, biking, and hiking. He had a natural curiosity about the world, was a life-long learner, and enjoyed traveling. He was a man of faith and a devoted member of Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, where he led bible studies with his "brothers," organized retreats in the great outdoors, and volunteered at the food shelf and on Habitat for Humanity builds. He had a gentle nature and a calm demeanor, and he was always ready to lend a helping hand.

Above all else, there was no greater joy for him than his children and grandchildren. While his daughters were young, the family spent time together camping in their pop-up camper, attending one another's sporting and school events, and running through airports to make standby flights. He was their number one fan on and off the field. With his grandchildren, "Grandpa" had unlimited energy and love to give which he expressed in many different ways; singing, reading, playing and caring for them whenever they were together, moments he absolutely cherished.

A memorial service to celebrate Denny's life will be held at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church on Saturday, January 11 2025 at 11:30am, with visitation beginning at 10:30am.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to Habitat for Humanity, The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, or Feeding America.

To Linda and family,
I read about Denny´s passing in the Spring issue of the Luther Magazine. I´m so sorry to hear about his death. Denny and I were good friends at Luther and he served as a groomsman in our wedding (Kathy Tegeler Fick is my wife). I always enjoyed Denny´s quiet, thoughtful, humble demeanor. He always brought a spark of joy to my life. I´m sorry we didn´t keep in touch following Luther. I´m sure you miss him greatly.

I just learned of Denny's passing, and was very saddened to hear of the loss of this outstanding person. Denny was my boss and mentor at Mesaba Airlines/Pinnacle/Endeavor, and I considered him to be a friend. He was a man of the highest integrity and intelligence, and loved his family very much. He will be missed by everyone he touched in life.

Condolences to the Ofstedahl family. We truly lost the best amongst us. Some are put here to "be the light." Denny did that magnificently and left the Earth a better place because he was here. He came as close as anyone to getting this life right and touched so many people in the process. He will be greatly missed. Until we meet again, my friend.

My condolences to Denny's extended family from here in Sydney, Australia. I was a classmate of Denny at Luther College and remember him well from dorm life at Ylvisaker Hall during freshman year. I really got to know this outstanding individual at Hothorpe Hall in England, however. He was a man of the finest character who proved to be my gardening mentor at Hothorpe. We worked the compost together in any and all weather conditions- even when I considered heavy rain showers to be a time not really ideal time for stomping vegetables. He taught me about leeks and other British garden favorites which he studied in the glass house out back of the manor house. Certainly his early years as a dairy farmer prepared him for carrying-on no matter how uncomfortable. From what I have heard from others, he became a great, dependable, and model employee of the airline industry. I lost touch as his career developed, but am not at all surprised to read about his exemplary successes as spiritual leader, father and grandfather. Denny possessed all the fine, humanitarian qualities of the late Jimmy Carter.

Warm thoughts to all from my wife Luda and me.

Denny was a wonderful disciple of Christ. Such a caring and thoughtful friend. Bud really enjoyed the SOTV early Friday morning men´s Bible Study for so many years which Denny led.
Denny was so kind and visited Bud several times these past couple of years as he struggled with his Parkinson´s Disease and became more home bound. He was so thoughtful to ask if we needed any assistance as we prepared to move from Apple Valley after 36 years to Decorah, Iowa to be close to my family for support.
Denny touched so many hearts and lives. It is hard to imagine the world without him. God must have special plans for him. Our love and sympathy to his dear family.

Linda, I am truly sorry for your loss. I had only been around Denny a handful of times since Abby & Wes married. I could tell he was a caring, loving, spiritual man. He loved his family and the Lord and it showed. He will be missed greatly but you will see him live on in your beautiful daughters and grandchildren.

My sympathy and prayers go out to the entire family.

I first met Denny about 17 years ago via the Friday Morning Men´s Group at Shepherd of the Valley. I also occasionally served meals with him at Easter Lutheran. In addition to the men´s group and serving meals, I would also run into Denny on a soccer pitch or tournament as both of my daughters grew up playing the game and he would either be officiating one of their games or another on a field nearby. It was always great to see him and have a quick chat.

One of the things that I most admired about Denny is how he spoke about his family. If talking with him in person or on Zoom, the smile on his face was always ear-to-ear. When talking with him on the phone, I could tell by the way he spoke, that he was smiling.

During 2023 and into early 2024, while I was in the midst of a job search after being laid off from a company I had worked for nearly 27 years, Denny was a beacon of light, support, and encouragement. I always felt stronger after talking with him.

I am also thankful for the leadership that he provided our Friday Morning Group. While he will no longer be present physically, I know his presence will be felt.

Peace,

Tom Ditlefsen

I'm deeply saddened to hear of Denny's passing. I had the privilege of working with him at Mississippi Valley Airlines in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

Denny was a truly good man. He was kind, compassionate, and always had a listening ear. He possessed incredible integrity and a deep faith that guided him through life.

I learned so much from Denny. He was thoughtful, warm-hearted, and always graceful in his interactions. You simply couldn't find a nicer person.

Denny and I would always enjoy talking about life. He had a unique ability to connect with anyone, and he always seemed to understand.

His kindness deeply impacted me. He inspired me to be a better person, and I will forever cherish the positive influence he had on my life.

He will be deeply missed.

I first met Denny in 2019 when I moved to Apple Valley, and joined the Tuesday morning Men's Bible Study at SOTV church. It was through this interaction that I learned to appreciate his leadership skills and knowledge of the Bible.
I've so appreciated our friendship and bonding at church activities, a Men's retreat, working with him in serving meals at Eastern Lutheran Church. I will miss his wonderful smile, and faith filled conversations, and the bonding about each of us coming from Wisconsin roots.
Sincere condolences to his family for such a loss. Thoughts and prayers go out to all.

I first met Denny at Luther College as a freshman, he was a senior, we both were involved in the weekly Christian Fellowship group. Wow, did I admire his faith, personality, and kindness- I hoped to someday be just like Denny...

Just imagine when 20 years when my family joined SOTV Lutheran church and found out Denny and his family were members! I was thrilled. What a delight to work with Jessica, Abby, and Paige in confirmation, I saw a few of their soccer games, and was at Camp Wapo too. I always admired the Ofstedahl family in so many was for the light they brought to the whole community.

About 15 years ago I joined the Friday morning men's "Shark Tank" Bible study (such a fun, caring, fabulous group). Denny had a way of leading discussions of challenging theological books with sensitive spiritual sensibility, laughter, and openness. One of the most skillful small group leaders I ever encountered in 35 years of church work.

Finally, my heart cries tears for the years his family will now miss from his presence. My soul is thankful that there will certainly be a legacy of his influence left on the lives of his daughters and 100's of others in this world.

Denny, we all anticipate our reunion to come.

When I first came to Shepherd of the Valley in 1992, Dennis was a Sunday School teacher. That in itself is extraordinary - a male volunteer helping teach Bible stories to young kids...every week! Immediately I knew what kind of man he was - giving, kind, hard-working, and helpful.
Later, when I became one of the pastors at SOTV, I asked Denny and a few others to give me feedback on my sermons on a regular basis for a few months. The reason I asked Denny was because I knew he would be honest in his feedback - but also kind. This is exactly what Our Lord wants in all of us - truth spoken in love. Denny did that for me. The group met a few times and I found the feedback from Denny and the others very helpful.
Although I have not been in any Bible studies with Denny, I know that he was a caring, thoughtful, diligent leader. I heard that feedback from many participants in the groups in which he was a part.
In addition, he was always helping people - Habitat, food shelf, meals at Easter Church - and those are just a few of the things Denny did. I will miss Denny and his soft-spoken presence. May all our memories of him be blessed.

I would like to share one of Denny's many wonderful attributes. I was a long-time member of Denny's Friday morning Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church bible study crew. I admired and will really miss Denny's leadership skills. He used them to organize, motivate, and set an example for the men of SOTV. He would diligently set an agenda for the next Friday morning session.
He would include resources and thoughtful comments digging into the topic we were discussing. He would organize visitations with members who were unable to participate.

Denny would also use his leadership skills to organize, plan, and then help lead the well attended men's retreats. He led by setting an example. He would just go out and do what needed to be done.

While Micki has known Denny most of her life, I first met Denny in 1980 after Micki and I were married in the church across the road from his parents home in rural Holmen, WI. We met several times over the years and it was always a pleasure to talk with him. The world was a better place because of him!

Denny was a shining example of a life well lived.

We were close colleagues while at Mississippi Valley Airlines and Air Wisconsin. At work, he was remarkably knowledgeable, professional, kind, and calm. Outside of work, he led a balanced life of family, faith, and fun.

When he moved to Minnesota we drifted apart, but I´m very grateful that we reconnected this past year. I really respected Denny´s perspectives and appreciated his friendship. His sudden passing reminds me how precious life should be treated.

Linda and daughters, my deep condolences for your loss of husband and dad.

To Denny´s family: I am so sorry for your loss. It shocked and saddened me to learn of his passing. I first met Denny in 2000 at Mesaba Airlines. We worked together a lot with safety programs and I always enjoyed his guidance, assistance, and friendship. I didn´t see him as often in recent years, but when I did, I always enjoyed chatting with him. Denny was so friendly, kind, professional, and just an all-around good person. He made this world a better place and we are all better people for having known him. May his memory always be a blessing. I hope you will be lifted up by the wonderful memories of Denny, and by the knowledge of how much his coworkers admired and respected him. Wishing you all strength, comfort, and peace during this difficult time. Fly high, Denny - may you always have tailwinds and blue skies...

Denny was a wonderful neighbor and a truly special person. I will miss seeing him puttering around the backyard and our chats about everything-often about the yard, gardening, landscaping, birds, our families, or his travels. He always seemed to have read the same news stories I had and had so much knowledge to share-always informed, always thoughtful. I loved hearing about his bumper crops of tomatoes and just liked asking for his advice about my yard or house.

He loved his family deeply, and it was clear how much joy they brought him. Denny was such a beloved part of this neighborhood, and his presence will be deeply missed by so many!!!!!!!

I´m heartbroken that we will be in Texas on the day of the funeral, but I hope to join via livestream to honor him. My thoughts and prayers are with Linda and the entire family during this difficult time.

Denny, you were an amazing person and loved my many. Thank you for being the person you were.
