Derek BACHMAN

I met Derek once while living in Saskatoon. I had reached out and he had invited me to come in and chat about the Saskatchewan music scene with him. I remember him being extremely warm, kind and generous with his time. I just wanted to take a moment to extend to condolences to his family and friends. I am so sorry for your loss.

Thinking of all of Derek's family at such a difficult time. So sorry - Derek was a truly good guy . Wish I could have been here for the funeral, sounded like an amazing and fitting tribute. Take care.

Derek has made such a great impression on me and many others that met him. He will be greatly missed.

I remember last year when I needed some help with my music. I was excited to show Derek how my music was coming along. When I met him he was very interested and gave me so much needed advise that got me thinking in the right direction. He was very casual and easy to talk to. I've known Derek since we formed the first Prairie Music Alliance back in 1999. I am so sad to hear that we've now lost him. He was such a kind soul, with so much positive energy. He made everyone feel important, and like they belonged. He always had a smile to share, and something to talk about. Although I only saw him a few times each year, I will miss him dearly. I wish I could be in Saskatoon today, to help say goodbye to our friend and colleague...

I am so sad about losing Derek. It just doesn't seem real. He was such a kind soul, and a truly genuine person. He made everyone feel important, and like they belonged. Derek was a good man of integrity who will be greatly missed. He always had kind word of encouragement all. He helped so many artists, musicians and technicians in the music industry over the years, and his influence will continue on. Derek and I crossed paths several times while working in the concert industry, usually traveling in the middle of the night together. When I first started promoting shows he showed me the ropes.
As I grew in the industry he recommended me for grants, awards, and to sit on award juries. He always had time for a phone call, whether it was just to rant about a stubborn artist or to run an idea by.

I didn't know Derek, but I imagine we share many friends in common from the music industry. My son Alex is a classmate of Joshuas, and this sudden tragedy has led to some deep thoughts on the nature of life, of service to others and of friendship as my son seeks to determine how best to respond to such a loss for a friend. We can only imagine how Joshua and Sebastien are feeling right now, but wanted to convey our prayers, our thoughts and our wishes for the boys and for all of Dereks family. Our tears flow also, as one young family to another. But we have a wonderful community, a wonderful school and the kids all have great hearts, so please reach out if there is anything at all that we can do.

Derek was both a friend and a colleague. He was the sort of person we need so desperately working in the arts. Not only was he a champion of music, the arts, and the creative industries; not only was he a performer and arts administrator; Derek was intelligent, kind, capable, and enthusiastic. I was looking forward to the time I would get to spend working with Derek, and his passing is an enormous loss. In the short time we had to work together, he taught a great deal, and his calm leadership style will always serve as a reminder of how to do this right.

I should like to offer condolences to all of Derek's family and friends, his colleagues, and all of the musicians and artists he has inspired and mentored. He was, truly, an incredible, exceptional man.

But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
