Valencia, California - Derek Christian Hansen, the son of Warren and MaryEl Hansen, passed away on July 8, 2022 in Valencia, CA. Derek was born in March of 1971, and grew up along with his brother, Curt, in San Luis Obispo, California. He attended local schools, graduating from San Luis High in 1989 as a valedictorian. He went on to attend Santa Clara University, graduating in 1993, magna cum laude as a business finance major. Following graduation, he studied and earned designations as a Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA), Chartered Financial Planner (CFP), and a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA). His career was spent in banking, most recently as Senior Portfolio Manager/Senior Vice President/Managing Director with U.S. Bank, Los Angeles, CA. On July 31, 1999, he married Tracy Ann Aberle in Montecito, CA. They made their home in Stevenson Ranch, CA. where they raised their sons Sean (18) and Kelly (15).
Growing up, Derek participated in a variety of youth sports, Boy Scouts, enjoyed BMX racing, and was very active in 4-H where he showed various animals at the California Mid-State Fair, always earning ribbons. He was ultimately named Beef Showman of the Year in 1988. In high school, Derek played in the band, competed on the golf team, was a CSF member, and was nominated for and attended Presidential Classroom and given a Golden Tiger Award. In college, Derek was a member of Beta Gamma Sigma National Honor Society for Business Schools and the Financial Management Honor Society.
Derek thrived on adventure and challenging himself. He loved animals and nature. Derek completed 2 LA Marathons and competitively ran the 900 steps of the US Bank Building---the tallest building in downtown LA. He skied the black diamond runs and learned how to barefoot water ski.
Derek, Tracy and their sons traveled extensively, including internationally and particularly enjoyed the ocean and the mountains. They were frequent concert attendees and faithfully followed team sports, especially the UCLA Bruins. As parents, they enthusiastically supported their sons' activities. Derek will be remembered for his warm, loving personality, his infectious smile, his integrity and his love for his family.
Derek is survived by his wife Tracy, sons Sean and Kelly, his parents Warren and MaryEl Hansen, his brother Curt, sister-in-law, Dana and niece Caroline, his in-laws Phil and Sandy Aberle, along with his uncles, aunts and numerous cousins. Derek passed along the gift of life to others through organ donation.
A Celebration of Life will be held at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Valencia, CA on Saturday, August 20, 2022, at 11:00 A.M with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations in Derek's honor may be made to Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services or OneLegacy Foundation.
