I am heartbroken to hear of Derrick's passing. I first met the dear boy when he was seventeen, so I saw him grow from a boy into a fine young man. He was always so fun-loving and so full of joie de vivre. He was such a good friend to Torrie and to me, one we knew would stand by us through anything. Every time I saw him after a long time of not seeing him, he would give me such a big bear hug! I can remember him saying to me, "Enjoy your life". I hope it's some small comfort to those closest to him that he enjoyed his, tragically short though it turned out to be.

Anne and Ben, I wish that I could have gotten to know you both better. I know that only a remarkable woman could have raised a son such as Derrick and only a remarkable man could have been so loved by him. My deepest sympathy to you both. My thoughts are with you.

I am sorry for your loss. He was my coworker and friend. A bright mind and a great soul, he will be missed.

He and I shared great conversation over lunch and breaks. His love for Ben made me understand that Love is Love, that was his great gift to me.
