Derval Mullin-Yarnell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 4, 2024.
In loving memory of Derval Finnaula Mary Teresa Mullin-Yarnell, who departed this world on November 27, 2024, in Winchester, California. Her passing, due to breast cancer and respiratory failure, marks the end of a life filled with love, faith, and devotion, leaving behind a legacy that will forever be cherished by her family and friends.

Born on May 23, 1950, in the warm embrace of her family home at 21 Edenmore Streeprect, Derry, Northern Ireland, Derval was one of ten children born to Francis (Frank) and Ellen (Nelle) Mullin. Growing up in a large family instilled in her a deep sense of community and compassion, qualities that she carried throughout her life and shared generously with those around her.

Derval's journey of faith began at Saint Mary's Catholic School, where she not only received her education but also nurtured her spiritual beliefs. Her Catholic faith was the cornerstone of her life, providing her with comfort and guidance through all of life's challenges. After graduation, she worked tirelessly in the shirt factories around Derry to support her family, demonstrating her unwavering commitment to those she loved. Her evenings were often spent at the Irish Kitchen Pub and Restaurant, where she sang and irish danced, bringing joy to others while contributing to her family's finances.

On May 23, 1972, Derval married the love of her life, Terry Yarnell, at Saint Eugene's Cathedral in Derry City. Their union was a testament to enduring love and partnership, a bond that spanned over five decades. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and shared dreams. Derval's devotion to her family was evident in her decision to start a daycare business in her home, allowing her to remain close to her children while contributing to the household income.

In 1989, Derval joined the Dietary Department at Doctor's Medical Center, where she worked alongside her husband, Terry, a registered nurse in the hospital. Her colleagues remember her as a compassionate and caring individual, always concerned for the welfare of others. Her career was cut short in 2005 when she suffered a stroke, the first of four, which lead to her medical retirement. Despite this setback, Derval's spirit remained unbroken, and she continued to be a source of strength and inspiration to her family.

In 2006, Derval and Terry relocated to San Diego, California, to be near their daughter and grandchild. This move marked a new chapter in their lives, filled with the joy of family gatherings and the warmth of shared memories. Derval's Irish wit and humor were legendary, and her family fondly recalls her colorful language, which she insisted were not "bad" words in Ireland. Her vibrant personality and infectious laughter were a testament to her zest for life.

Derval's Catholic faith was a guiding light throughout her life, embodying the virtues of kindness, generosity, and love. Her faith journey was a source of strength, and she found solace in the belief that she would one day be reunited with her loved ones in the afterlife. Her life was a testament to the power of love, faith, and resilience, and her memory will forever be a blessing to those who knew her.

Derval is survived by her devoted husband, Terry Yarnell, their beloved son, Christopher Yarnell, and their cherished daughter, Siobhan Yarnell-Gurney. Her legacy lives on through her grandchildren, Marie and Sean Gurney, who were the pride and joy of her life. She is also survived by her sons-in-law, Jason Gurney and Scott Neville, and her siblings, Annette Mullin-Kelsey, Keelin Mullin-Wharton, Alastrionna Mullin-Richards, Ingrid Mullin-Johnston, Declan Mullin, and Martin Mullin. Derval was preceded in death by her parents, Francis and Ellen Mullin, her sisters, Helen Mullin-Pryor and Benvon Mullin, and her brother, Michael Mullin. Her numerous nieces and nephews held a special place in her heart, and she dearly loved each one of them.

A Catholic Funeral Mass will be held in her honor at Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta Catholic Church, located at 34750 Whisper Heights Parkway, Winchester, CA 92596, at 10:00 AM on December 20, 2024. Following the service, family and friends are invited to celebrate Derval's life at an open house gathering at the family home, 29922 Windmill Farms Road, Winchester, California. A private graveside visit will follow for the family.

As we bid farewell to our beloved Derval, we take comfort in the knowledge that she is at peace, embraced by the eternal love of her Creator. May her soul rest in everlasting peace, and may her spirit continue to guide and inspire her family and friends.

Derval is our neighbor. I met her twice and she is just a sweet lady with a sweetest smile. I also heard good things about her through Terry and how much time they have spent together. My heartfelt condolences to the family.

Anytime she would go on a rant (cussing). I remember watching her favorite show Ellen with her. She definitely made a impact on anyone she bet. Please know my heart is with your family even though I am not physically there.
