Devon Guthery Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 17, 2024.
Devon "Von" Wayne Guthery was born in Chickasha, Oklahoma on April 10, 1936, to Veta and Virgil Guthery. By 1940 the Gutherys had relocated to Glendale, Arizona and soon opened their first service station in the Downtown Glendale area. Von joined his dad in business shortly after his graduation from Glendale High School. It was at this time he also met the love of his life, Wanda Jean Blackwood. They married in 1956. Together, they raised three children, Vonette, Michael, and Richard.

Von was a successful businessman throughout his life. He owned several service stations, a Mac Tool business, and two Quick Lube automotive shops in the West Phoenix and Glendale area. He retired in 1995.

Shortly after retirement, Von and Wanda moved from their home in Glendale to enjoy their golden years in Sun City, Arizona. Von was quite active in their community. He was a board member of the SCHOA and the Sun City's Sundial Men's Club where he volunteered weekly. While Von lived on the golf course and enjoyed playing from time to time, his true passion was bowling. He maintained a high average for several years and at one time bowled in two leagues.

Von and Wanda loved their neighbors and many friends in Sun City. They enjoyed spending time with them as well as family, grandchildren and great grandchildren. They had just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary before Wanda's untimely death in 2016.

For the next few years, despite his diminishing health, Von enjoyed spending time with his family as often as possible. In the quiet of the night, December 15, 2022, the Lord called him home. He will forever be remembered for his laughter, his devotion to friends and family, and the basic reassurance of knowing he always had your back.
