Diana Amara Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 26, 2025.
Diana Leigh Amara (Bergman), a devoted daughter, sister, mother, and friend, passed away on September 19, 2025, in New Haven, Connecticut, at the age of 57, after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer.

Diana was born on July 1, 1968, in Marlboro, Massachusetts, and grew up in South Windsor, CT. She graduated from South Windsor High School in 1986 and went on to earn her bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Connecticut in 1990 and a master's degree at Southern Connecticut State University.

She raised her beloved children-Kaitlin, Brandon, and Abigail-in Chester, CT, creating a home full of laughter, creativity, and compassion. Diana later worked as a counselor at Chester Elementary School, where her patience, humor, and dedication left a lasting impact on both students and colleagues. She was also a family therapist in her own private practice in Essex, CT.

Her humor, generosity, and unwavering loyalty made everyone around her feel valued and loved. Diana had a remarkable ability to lift spirits, offer comfort, and forge connections that endured a lifetime. She also cherished attending Max Creek concerts with her brother Eric throughout the years, finding joy in music, friendship, and shared experiences. Though her passing leaves a deep emptiness, her spirit lives on in the countless lives she touched.

She is survived by her partner, Charles Schmitt of Cromwell, CT; her loving parents, Robert and Winifred (Patton) Bergman of Montville, CT; her brother, Eric Bergman, and his wife, Tania Abbatello of Clinton, CT; and her three children: Kaitlin Amara and her fiancé, Michael Szleszynski of Middletown, CT; Brandon Amara of Chester, CT; and Abigail Amara of Chester, CT. She is also survived by her niece, Kristina Bergman, and nephew, Robert Bergman, both of Clinton, CT. Her greatest joy was her family, and she took immense pride in watching her children grow, always offering them unconditional love and encouragement.

A celebration of Diana's life will be held on October 11, 2025, at the Chester Meeting House in Chester, CT, from 12-4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to Camp Kesem, which provides free summer camps nationwide for children impacted by a parent's cancer.

Diana's memory will forever be a blessing to all who knew her-a testament to a life lived with love, laughter, and purpose.

Dear Kate, Brandon, and Abby - We were all devastated to learn of your mother´s passing. Diana was a kind, beautiful, and caring person whom I greatly admired. We got to know each other at United Church of Chester, and of course as moms of children in the same grade school class. One of the last times we spoke, she was carrying a giant bag of soccer balls to the field at JW - as always, playing a large role in her children´s lives. We are deeply saddened and share in your grief.

Diana and I never met in person but we became quick friends online along with another friend Gaby. We became known as the Misteltoe Ladies. The 3 of us shared something in common unfortunately ovarian cancer. We would encourage each other daily, cry together and rejoice with one another. We miss her greatly. the Misteltoe ladies.

I had the privilege of caring for Diana during her intermittent stays at Smilow. The first time I met her she was so graceful, kind, inquisitive and genuine. I met her 9 months later and she remembered me and everything I told her about during our first interaction. What a remarkable memory and she was absolutely interested in how I had been and what I had been up to. The feeling was mutual.

The last time I saw her we wished each other well and she looked good, tired, but good. Her disposition was still happy, and genuinely interested in discussing life. We marveled over her various family members living in China for a bit, the WhatsApp that allowed us all to keep in touch with loved ones far away, and she spoke fondly of her children often.

My career in oncology, and, nursing in general for over a decade has lead me to see many people pass, often due to a terrible disease they didn´t deserve and pass away at an age far too young. Only an individuals few stick with me, for various reasons. Diana is one I´ll always remember as a cherished person who was an exceptionally delightful, insightful, kind and humorous (in the best way for me - dry!). I´m sending love to her loved ones and gratitude for having been fortunate enough to have met this remarkable woman.

Diana, thank you for the privilege of letting me get to know you. You will absolutely be missed and remembered.

"By their fruits you shall know them" (Matthew 7:15-20)! I didn´t know Diana, but I know her daughter, Kate. May Diana, who left us at much too young an age, reap the reward of her great faith and wonderful works, and may family find comfort in their faith, and in their family and friends!
