Diane Nelson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 16, 2011.
Diane Elaine Nelson (Jay)

Diane passed from this life to be with her creator on August 13, 2011, in Eureka, CA., with family at her bedside.
Diane Elaine Nelson, born November 18, 1953 in Eureka, California to Darell & Gloria Nelson. At the time of her birth the family resided in Orick. In 1956 the family moved to Crescent City and resided there until the death of Diane's father who was killed in a logging accident in 1957 in Klamath. The family relocated to McKinleyville where Diane grew up. Diane was baptized at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Arcata in the mid 60's. She attended elementary school at the Scheffler Seventh Day Adventist School and Junior High School at McKinleyville Elementary School and graduated from McKinleyville High School in 1971. Diane moved to Santa Rosa during her Senior Year of High School to live with her sister. She attended one semester at Santa Rosa High and finished her Senior year early, but returned to McKinleyville to graduate from McKinleyville High school with her classmates and friends. After High School Diane moved to San Francicso and graduated from Healds Business College and worked at Wells Fargo Bank in San Francisco. She always loved living in San Francisco. Diane later attended College of the Redwoods. She was a proud member of the Yurok Tribe of California and loved spending time in Klamath and on the Klamath River.
Diane had worked for the Northern California Indian Development Council in the Fiscal Department and Gift Shop. She also worked for ten years for the Yurok Tribe in the Administrative, Enrollment/Elections and Planning Departments. While in the Planning Department she worked on the planning of the new Yurok Tribal Office in Klamath. She was responsible for selecting and purchasing the furniture for the new building of which she was very proud. She also worked for Two Feathers Native American Family Services. For the past five years she worked at United Indian Health Services at the Potowat Health Village. When she worked in Behavioral Health she loved going into Juvenile Hall or going to Court to advocate for Native Youth. Her last position was in the Health Promotions as a Health Promotions Technician where she worked with the Teen Advisory Group (TAG) and other programs. She loved her TAG kids.
After a long courageous battle with breast cancer, her life was taken from us much too soon due to two debilitating falls that broke her hip. Her first fall occurred on June 5th in Crescent City at which time she was flown to Mercy Hospital in Redding. Her second fall occurred on July 20th in Eureka, and this time she was flown to San Francisco. The combination of the broken hip and femur and the spread of cancer through her whole body made her too weak to fight off the complications of these injuries and cancer. Her family would like to thank Mercy Hospital in Redding, UCSF/San Francisco General Hospital for the excellent skilled care she received. We would especially like to thank St, Joseph Hospital in Eureka for the compassionate, excellent care she received here at home. The Doctor's, Nurses, Nursing Assistants, Lift Team, and other carrying staff were the utmost professionals at all times and yet exhibited the greatest human kindness imaginable to Diane, her family and the many friends that visited her. Thank You for making our last days with Diane easier to cope with. We would also like to thank Hospice of Humboldt for their assistance in helping the family get through our loss. We also want to thank the more than 100 family and friends for the multiple visits and many hours that they spent at the hospital to visit Diane and support the family. We received many phone calls and greatly appreciated each and every one.
Diane is survived by her two sons, Ricky Nelson and Cory Nelson of McKinleyville. Her mother, Gloria Shuster and step-father, Del Shuster of McKinleyville, Sister, Linda Ogburn Gillette and husband, Jeff Gillette of Eureka, Brother, Richard Dale Nelson of McKinleyville. She is also survived by her two grandchildren, whom she loved with all of her heart, Dylan Charles Nelson and Trinity Grace Nelson. They fondly referred to her as Grandma Di Di. Her most favorite thing was to spend time with her grandchildren and they were everything to her. Diane is survived by her only niece, Barbara Ann Ogburn of Aliso Viejo, CA. Diane is survived by her Paternal Aunt, Nita Whitaker of Willow Creek, CA. with whom they shared a special bond, as Diane was born on her birthday. She is survived by her Maternal aunts, Barbara Combs of Naselle, Washington, Barbara Lewis and Joyce Tracy of Hoopa and numerous cousins and other relatives too many to name.
Diane is preceded by her father, Darell Eugene Nelson, step father, Dane Jay, grandparents, Oscar and Eloise Nelson and Ernie Lewis, Hazel Lewis, Alice Lewis, great grandmother, Libby Harripop Nix, aunt and uncle, Dawn and Ed Ronlund of Crescent City, CA, Ernest (Pete) Lewis, Sr and Lawrence Tracy of Hoopa, CA. Great aunts and uncles, Pete and Florence Beaver, Thomas and Dorothy Nix, George and Edith Hancorne and special cousins, Glenna Beaver, Ernest Lewis, Jr. (Butch) and Sherry Tracy. Diane will now be with her very special friends that she missed very much, Tracy Melendy and Cathy Carmesin. Diane and Cathy can chat for hours on end again.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donation be made to United Indian Health Services, Teen Advisory Group (TAG) at 1600 Weeot Way, Arcata, CA. 95521 or the Humboldt Community Breast Health Project at 987 8th Street, Arcata, CA. 95521.

I am sorry for our loss, Diane was a very caring person, she loved her children, her grandchildren and her family. She had a great sense of humor we often talked of life and death we came to the conclusion we had no control of either. I am sad she had to go. I pray that we find the compassion Diane found for others even in her time of trials.

To Dianes family; I am so sorry to hear of Dianes passing. I knew her for a brief period of time, but it was a time of self knowledge and growth, she helped me in so many ways. I am truly sorry for taking so long to express my sorrow and missing her memorial..you were there for me when John passed and I thank you for it. I hope you get to read this as I have no way in getting in touch with you. I hope to pass you in the street or see you in the stores.
My heart goes out to you and yours.

My sincerest sympathy is with you in your loss of this lovely lady. Her positive attitude was an inspiration to all who were fortunate to know her. I met Diane through my job at the Yurok Tribe and my best friend Traci Melendy-O'Rourke and from the time I met her she was always so happy even when things were not going well. I will always remember her happy face as well as Traci's kindness. They are both together now and that is wonderful. My prayers to the family.

Diane was pregnant with Cory and working in the fiscal department when I started my job at NCIDC. She had a beautiful smile that lit up her whole face and sparkling eyes that I will never forget. Whenever I saw her over the years, it was like we saw each other yesterday. I always enjoyed visiting and laughing with her. Her memory lives on in all who knew her and will not be forgotten. She will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers to all of her family.

Diane was such a very strong woman who knew how to put up a good fight. A model for community service she was not afraid of hard work. She loved working with young people and did whatever she could to help them make healthy choices so that the could live long, happy, productive lives. I will miss her smile and her funny stories. I am so very thankful for the time that we got to spend together visiting and laughing. We send our prayers, love, and hugs to the family during this very difficult time. I'm so sorry that she is gone. I remember how she could talk on two cell phones at the same time - one on each ear. She was always so busy working and attending college. I pray that for her family that you will continue to feel her spirit surrounding you.

To Diane's Family-
I just wanted to let you all know that I enjoyed all the time and conversations I've had with Diane. She will be truly missed by everyone and our Blake/Puzz family will miss her tremendously. She would always share stories about her love for her grandchildren and always wanted the best for her boys. Last spring, Diane called me and we chatted for a long time as she was missing my Auntie. I think it was therapeutic for her to talk to me, and soon I found out that it was just as important for me to be speaking with Diane at that time. My prayers to the family.

Very sorry for your loss, remember the next face Diane will see will be Jesus, May our God in Heaven comfort each of you with that promiss, because he loves each of you.

Diane was one of those special people who understood and exemplified what it means to be a part of a community. It seems like she never missed a community get together and could always be seen smiling, saying hello and visiting everyone. She was one of those people who was also behind the scenes to make things happen, working in the kitchen, setting up and cleaning up for events, making sure everyone was comfortable. She made our community a better place and she will be missed by all of us. All of the family is in our thoughts and prayers. With lots of love to all of you, Alme and Pimm Allen and girls

Dear Diane, I was a joy to help take care of you when you had your doctor visits here at Potawot. You had a zest for life that can not be described! You were so nice to me and all the staff that you came in contact with here. It is no wonder why you are going to be so sorely missed! I hope you are at peace. To her family, you have lost a wonderful person who can never be replaced. I pray that the creator eases your pain and brightens your memories! I send my condolances to you and all of yours!
