IGLESIAS (Martinec),
Virginia Ann
Nov. 3, 1944 - March 28, 2017

Virginia Ann Iglesias was born November 3, 1944 in Temple, Texas to Joe Lee and Madolin Martinec and was to become the oldest of twelve children. She passed away on Tuesday, March 28 in Austin, Texas due to complications from cancer.

She met her husband Raul, who escaped Cuba in 1962 as part of Operation Peter Pan, at a high school dance in Austin that same year. Virgie was attending St. Mary's Academy, and Raul was attending St. Edwards (a high school at that time). The high school sweethearts then went on to get married in 1966 in Puerto Rico. They lived in Puerto Rico, Dallas, Miami and Ft. Lauderdale, and eventually settled in Austin. Upon their return to Austin, they had their two children, Madolin Maria and Raul Joseph (RJ). Virgie cherished her family, particularly her grandson Ben

Virgie touched the lives of many people, was patient and loved family and friends unconditionally. She had a big heart, a big smile, and a great laugh. One of Raul's favorite things was the sparkle in her eyes. Her greatest love was her family, both immediate and extended. She enjoyed family get-togethers, good jokes, sweet espressos, games (particularly chicken foot dominoes), travel (especially visiting Madolin and Ben in Seattle, and she and Raul's trip to Spain in 2015), and the new family addition, their puppy Babalú. She could also cook a mean batch of black beans and great paella. We all loved her humor and her way of getting her siblings' names mixed up as she tried to talk to them, saying "David, Tom, Steve, darn it, BILL"'. It was funny to all of us, and yet she enjoyed it too.

She is survived by her husband of almost 51 years Raul, son RJ, daughter Madolin, her dearly beloved grandson Ben, her mother Madolin, eleven brothers and sisters, and many in-laws, nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her father Joe Lee, her in-laws Raul S. Iglesias and Maria Calero-Iglesias, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. She will be sorely missed by everyone she helped and whose lives she otherwise touched.

The family would like to thank Hospice Austin staff, especially those at Christopher House for their thoughtful care - Gia, Diana, Tracy and Kendra and Doctors Galusha and Pacl, with special thanks to Tish who provided such compassionate and loving nursing care in Virgie's final hours.

Rosary will be held at 7 PM on Monday, April 3 at St. Mary's Cathedral at 203 E. 10th Street, Austin, 78701, with funeral mass at 2 PM on Tuesday, April 4, also at St. Mary's.

Virgie, even though we'll miss you, you're always in our hearts. Wherever there's a smile, or a twinkle in the eye, or a kiss and hug, we'll see you. Much love forever!

This is a note that Raul wrote about Virgie.

Virginia Martinec de Iglesias. Believe it folks, that is how her name is printed on our wedding papers.

We all knew her as Virgie, a great lady, an amazing mom and an unbelievable Grandma, and, yes, we will all miss her, I know I will, so will my kids, and so will My Little Monkey, Benjamin, but having lost the battle to cancer does not mean she lost, not really. I know she is in a better place, not in pain, not suffering as she was the last few weeks of her life, but enjoying the view, looking down at us and smiling, probably even nodding, just knowing that we are all here for her.

She would have wanted a party, a celebration, not the watery eyes, the tears. She was a loving individual, in more ways than I could describe or say, but even after knowing her for 52 years and being married to her for over 50, she continued to surprise me with her wit, and the sound of her laughter was contagious. Simply put, my wife, the mom of my two kids and grandma of Ben was a lady that was full of life and wisdom.

She was also very patient, gosh, she had to be to put up with me for so many years, and yet we seemed to find a balance in how to do things together and enjoy doing them all, and let me tell you folks, that is easier said than done.

She once asked me why I liked her, and of course being the smart teenager I was then, I told her your legs. In reality, it was never her legs, but the sparkle I saw in her eyes, sometimes green, sometimes blue, but to me it was as if I saw a light in those precious eyes.

Love her, heck who didn't like or love Virgie? We all found her humor, her way of getting all her siblings' names mixed up as she tried to talk to Bill, saying David, Tom, Steve, darn it, BILL and it was funny to all of us, and yet she enjoyed it too.

This is a letter to Virgie from her high school friend Linda Lucas.

Dear Virginia,
I write to let you know I am thinking of you now. I want to thank you for being the kind of friend who, after not seeing me for what, about 30 years?, stepped right up at the Reunion with a smile and a welcoming hug. The kind of friend who is able to continue the conversations started 30 years ago catching up, laughing, telling stories, enjoying the moments. The kind of friend who was an ally in high school, a comrade as we chased the boys, frustrated some nuns, and loved each other.

Thank you for being the best kind of friend a woman could have. Your friendship, even in short spurts across the years, has enriched my life.
Thank you.
With love and peace, Linda

Dearest Virgie,
So many things to tell you. I often thought of you, especially around your birthday month and Christmas. Your laughter and genuine concern for others warmed my heart. You and everyone have always welcomed me to all family events, some at your house and enjoyed your delicious dishes. Thank you for your love for your cousin James from childhood to now. I am grateful for being a part of your, Raul's, RJ's, and Mad's lives. Gracias por tu amor. Siempre en mi corazon. Mitzi Irizarry-Kocurek
