My fathers favorite football player playing on his favorite team. His beloved Chicago Bears. The most excited I ever saw my father on front of a TV was when Dick Butkus caught a pass in the end zone for an extra point to beat the Washington Redskins.

Wesley R. Carr -- I was very sad to hear that my childhood friend and neighbor had passed too soon. We lived on Lowe Ave., in Fernwood, an area on Chicago South Side, 103rd & Halsted. Our sandlot football team of grammar school age kids only lost one game in three years. We graduated in January, 1957 from Fernwood Grammer School. He used to call me "Truck", because my last name was 'Carr'. He and his bros went to CVS instead of Fenger, where I hoped to play football against him, but I had to go to Harlan, a new high school because I lived south of Halsted. We rarely saw one another after words. I occasionally saw him at athletic venues and at Fireside Restaurant in Glenwood when he visited his mother and old friends. I'm 81 and feel Mr. Death coming for me. I grieve for his wife and kids and family. Great memories, Wes

Celebrating the life of a true talented Legend a Football Player himself Dick Butkus as we are all mourning the passing, yet he will be truly missed, never be forgotten. Also, we all know that he made appearances on TV shows, in movies two and I do remember one show My Dad´s that he played a restaurant owner and he was great on that show.
We all know that he is in a good place now, he has reunited with the people he work with, played with on the field. My thoughts, prayers are with you.
RIP

Butkus was a true legend. Mr Football himself.
He played hard even with injuries. Not once did he ever complain. He gave everything he had and then some. Had the honor of seeing his bust in Canton.
He will always be a Chicago Bear.
His passing hurt like no other. This mama bear will not let your legacy pass. Till we meet again.

Dick Butkus is why I am a football fan and specifically a Bears fan. Thank You for the wonderful introduction to the game. His effort never wavered while the scoreboard said different. I look back at those times with great affection and admiration. Rest in Peace Dick.

I was honored enough to have Dick Butkus coach me in high school at a week long football camp in Vermont back in the 70s.. He didn't just make an appearance. He worked with us, ate with us, and spoke with us the whole time. When he said to me one day, "Nice hit son", my feet didn't touch the ground the rest of the week. Met him again in the 90s and we spoke about that camp. He remembered how hot it was that week. He was my football idol growing up and will always be.

As a child and a girl my father and I watched games together. I did not really understand football as a young girl. I knew one thing that Mr. Butkus seemed to be the best player on the field. I liked Defense better then offense. I raised my own sons declaring Mr. Butkus was the very best. I met him in the early 2000's in Scottsdale Arizona. I had only paid to have my book autographed. When it was my turn he said he knew I was from Chicago so asked me to come sit on the couch and take a picture. I was in awe of him. He said he could tell I was born on the south side of Chicago because of my complexion. He autographed my book and I took the picture. I went back to pick the picture up the next day and he had left an autographed football. He was a ferocious player but a kind and gentle man. The Kosierowski family will miss you.

I grow up watching Dick play each week of the season, no one hit like Dick did. It was a different time but no plays like Dick did.

To the Butkus Family, the Schulte Family from Roseland & Washington Heights send our deepest condolences to Your Family. My Father (Ray) & Brother (Donnie) were CVS Graduates and knew Dick & all your Family very well growing up, even rebuilding the porch on the Family house on 103rd & Lowe, as both were #141 Carpenters. Dick donated blood for my Mother when she had open heart surgery in 1969 @ Mt. Sinai. The best Football Player ever hands down, & even better human being & larger than life person. There are many stories that I could talk about, but so very lucky to have Duck & Family as part of my childhood.

Wow! "Something" told me to Google Dick's name after dinner tonight and WOW....he "passed"...3 days ago (on Oct 5, 2023)
I played football at Lindblom HS on Chicago's Southside and Dick went to CVS a few miles farther South....and for 3 summers....Dick and I would go to Marquette Park (also Sout Side ChiKaGo) at 6pm every week night and work out for the upcoming football season AND.....a Construction Co hired Dick and I (and a few other fellow footballer workout guys) got jobs to build houses in a Big Housing Development on da Sout Side.
I'll never forget our first day on the job. Me and 4 or 5 fellow footballers were assigned to work on building concrete foundations for the houses going up. We had to haul 4ft by 8ft wood frames off trucks and build basement walls.
On our first day...at lunch time...we noticed Dick was not around...so we asked one of the Company workers and he told us...."Oh! Dick will be around when you get the Frame secured."
So....when we had the Basement Frame secured....here comes Dick ....walking towards us with some "measuring tools"....which he went up to the sides of the Frames and "Measured"...so the concrete could be poured in the right places and depth.
So....i will NEVER forget this massive, muscular guy....working with a Tape Measure AND....every evening when we were all working out....guess WHO had "Lots of Energy"? Yup....twas Dick the "Measurer".
Dick was LOTS of fun to know AND.....he got us all Free Tickets to Bears Games..... every year. Will never forget him. Hope you have a "Great Life" up there Dick.

In memory of the greatest linebacker of all time..Dick was amazing to watch when he played for the Chicago Bears. The excitement of the game tripled viewing him in action, definitely a play maker back in the day. Today´s football no comparison to those years. His football career memories are here to stay forever.... Prayers and Blessings to family and friends

Many have said that he was the greatest who ever played the Middle Linebacker position. And many have also said that he was the greatest football player, ever. Surely, Dick would have dominated in any era. And he was as much an all-time great character, as he was an all-time great on the gridiron.

The best summary I've ever heard of Dick's presence and performance, on the field of play, was from an NFL Films' segment on Dick's nonpareil football career. The narrator was the great Bill Woodson, and he stated: "To talk about him (Butkus), is to drain the vocabulary of superlatives."

RIP Mr. Butkus !
As an NFL fan I enjoyed seeing you in action in late 1960s and early 1970s on tv as a kid. Even though the Dallas Cowboys are my favorite team and always will be, I admire NFL talent in every era and enjoy seeing the competition among teams, for I played 6 man football in Texas and 11 man football in Texas. Football players have a good bond, for we can relate to each other from old men to young men can talk about the game, from taking hits and giving hits to disappointing losses with sorrow to big wins that give feelings/pleasures of joy and victory.
You Dick Butkus and other NFL players like Lawerence Taylor, Thomas "Hollywood" Henderson are the standards of what NFL linebackers should be.
My condolences to the Butkus family for your loss.

I want to first of all say my sincere condolences to his Family. I also want to pay tribute to him as an athlete and football player. I was a young boy in the 60's and a teenager in the early 70's so I am so proud to say that I was able to watch Dick play on television back then numerous times and I am a huge sports fan and have been one all my life. In all of my years of following and watching sports and all of the thousands upon thousands of athletes I have seen or know of or heard of, to put it simply, I have never seen another athlete or player or even competitor play with the intent and enthusiasm to be the absolute best that he could possibly be more than Dick Butkus. It was an absolute honor and joy for me to have been able to view him play football when he played. Thank you Mr. Dick Butkus for all the wonderful memories!! May you rest in peace.

To the Butkus Family:

I will always treasure the honor and pleasure it was to have met Dick some 15 years ago. He was not only friendly and personable but displayed a unique sense of humor. I express my condolences to you all. To me, he wasn't just a star Hall of Fame football player for the Bears. He was an exemplary individual.
