I am so deeply saddened by the loss of my friend, Dick Button. He was a pioneer, innovator, and a legend in our sport. He had a terrific sense of humor and always had me laughing, even on the phone. We shared many good times working together at figure skating events for ABC television. An inspiration to many, he will be missed by all.

Dick Button brought skating from figure eight figures to today's jumping acrobatics which he inaugurated with the first double axel and the first triple jump in competition .
He always emphasized artistry in skating, which he brought to the forefront with females skaters like Peggy Fleming and Janet Lynn.
I will post a very happy picture of Dick and his family taken one summer poolside at my parent's house in Amagansett, Long Island. His happiness reflects how much his family meant to him and is what we should remember most about him--besides his witty but meaningful commentary. David Tyson

While Dick is best known for ice skating, I knew him for many years thorough his keen interest and insight into American classical decorative arts. There too he focused on the best and was always willing to share his experience and knowledge. He was also an avid gardener sharing his amazing Ice Pond Farm yearly with the public. A Renaissance man indeed and a life well-lived. Dick, you will be missed.

Mr. Button was such a nice man to me when I was young. My Dad (Bob Mesterton of WCAX TV) filmed him. I think at UVM where Daddy, also, taught Figure Skating. I remember few people my father filmed, but I remember Mr. Button. I want his family to know he impressed a young skater.
If his family is interested, the film is probably still filed at WCAX South Burlington, VT.

I have watched Olympic skating for a long time. Dick Button is a great commentator. When he broke through on the triple loop. He set the bar for others to break. I like his style and professionalism! Love you!

My dad knew Mr Button and my first memory of him was going with my dad to watch him train skaters at the `32 Olympic stadium on the rink named for his coach, Mr Lucci.

He was hands down the most honest and best commentator in figure skating. His analysis was spot on. He will be greatly missed. Sending prayers and sincere condolences to his family and friends. He was genuinely one of a kind.

My deepest sympathy to the family of Mr. Button - I have been a fan since the 60s listening to him provide commentary for a young Peggy Fleming. He is the reason I love figure skating to this day . His insightful , honest comments taught me everything I know about the sport. I think of him with every layback spin I see as I think to myself so very often "Dick would say that back leg is not in the proper position for that layback. Ice skating will not be the same without him. Thank you for sharing him with us.
