Dieter Bornemann Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 17, 2021.
Dieter Bornemann, longtime Red Bank resident and award-winning restauranteur passed away in Las Vegas Dec. 4, 2021.
Born in Cologne, Germany in 1941, Dieter pursued his passion for cooking, graduating from Le Cordon Bleu in Paris in the 1960's. Upon graduation he returned to Germany as a pastry chef where he began his career in the hotel business. In 1966 he opened Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas as its executive chef.
After several years in Las Vegas with his lifelong partner of over 40 years, the late James Borden of Shrewsbury, Dieter and Jimmy moved back to Red Bank where they opened The Little Kraut- renowned for its fine German/Continental cuisine and old world charm. The Little Kraut received a 3 star rating by the New York Times and was featured on WABC-TV's Bob Lape's, "The Eyewitness Gourmet" in the 1970's.
One of Dieter's greatest joys over the years was his role as Santa Claus at Christmastime in Red Bank, riding through town on the fire truck and arriving at the train station on the North Jersey Coast train. It was a memory he enjoyed reminiscing about year after year.
Dieter had a special place in his heart for Red Bank and the many friendships he and Jimmy developed over the years through the Little Kraut and their participation in community events. He was a proud American and often expressed his gratitude for the opportunities that America had afforded him.
A private memorial service will be held in Las Vegas. Please visit the guestbook to leave your condolences.

Of course I remember Dieter like it was yesterday. I worked there in 1993 to 1992. I arrive there in the late four with a girlfriend at the Time from Vienna. Her name was Esther Deutsch. She soon went back to Germany and I was left there to learn how to be a first class waiter. Will the staff were amazing John, and Bill the bartenders. Scott, Carol and Bill and Pat or waiters with me. That was a magical time in my life. We used to sit at the bar after the restaurant was closed and drink a couple of beers and then go over to the Dublin pub. Made a lot of money as a waiter there and I am grateful for that time in my life. God bless. Adam Sell.

RIP Dieter. I learned a lot from you and Jimmy when I worked at the Monmouth St. location back in the mid 70's.
