I have lost a friend and a person to which I could relate. We were on the same team. I will miss your smile and your unrelenting enthusiasm with a touch of humour and optimism. Thanks for being a small, but important/significant acquaintance. Thanks for being true and you...always Mark.....

I don't remember the specifics of many of the days of my residency training - they all blurred together. But I will always remember my day with Dr. Giannoulis. I was an R1 at RCH and he was doing a locum there. He was so fun to be with. He made me laugh all day long. He was extremely friendly to everyone - an awesome guy.

Dimitri mas... kalo sou taksidi!
He will be with us always, when we smile, when we laugh, when we meet with caring, generous, loving and sincere people... we will remember him... and smile even more... a smile as large as our Dimitris.
We will love him always as he loved us truly...
Be strong dear Theo, Thea, Connie and Maria (and families), he is and will forever be with you, looking after you from above with his everlasting smile.
His joy is our joy… let us not make him weep.

We were introduced to Dimitrios seven years ago by his very close friend Tara. Even though our paths crossed infrequently, Dimitrios had a way of letting us know that he valued our friendship. We will truly miss his genuine warmth and wonderful sense of humour.

I am so sorry to hear this news. I still cannot believe it. Dimitri was a wonderful friend. Always upbeat and fun, and we had a lot of fun together. When we were in Edmonton at U of A, and during his first few years in Vancouver, we were inseparable! He was generous with everything, especially if he had baked it or cooked it (and then you had better eat two more cookies and have some more Greek coffee and take a few cookies home with you -- he was stubborn that way!) I'm sure everyone will agree he was the world's best host, with a real talent for making his friends feel welcome in his home. He was always ready to listen, or to share a funny story (or some salacious secret!) He was also, of course, incredibly intelligent and along with that came his sharp wit. No one could top Dimitri's jokes and word play.

Dimitri was a very warm and loving friend and will always have a special place in my heart.

My deepest condolences to his parents and his sisters, whom he loved so, so much.

Dimitri was a wonderful colleague who joined us in Toronto several years ago from Vancouver for an all too short attachment in regional anesthesia. I was sitting the anesthesia fellowship exams at the time and he gave his time without hesitation to help me with that difficult process.
He is very fondly remembered at Toronto Western Hospital because of his kind and fun loving nature and I am very sad to hear of his passing.

I am so very sorry to hear of Jim's passing. Although I haven't seen Jim since I left STS after his Grade 11 year, I will always remember him as a fun, outgoing and helpful person. It makes perfect sense to me that he went into the helping professions for that is how I saw him. My sympathies to all as he will certainly be missed by those close to him.

Working in the Operating Room at U.B.C. Hospital with Dimitri was always a pleasure. He was entertaining with the stories of his travel and adventures of designing an apartment. He was also considerate, professional, and a joy to work with, he will be missed by the nurses at U.B.C.

Dear Costa and Mando Giannouli,
Our deepest, most heartfelt condolences to you and your family. There are no words to describe the pain of the loss of a child. May God give you strength and courage at this time.
Below is a poem that a friend shared with me at the time of my little brother's passing six years ago. I can only hope that it may bring you some form of comfort, as it has to my parents (Vassilios and Stavroula Vettas) and me ever since.

God's Lent Child

"I'll lend you for a little while a child of mine," God said,
"For you to love the while he lives and mourn for when he's dead.
It may be six or seven years or forty-two or three,
But will you, till I call him back, take care of Him for me?"

"He'll bring his charms to gladden you and should his stay be brief,
You'll have all you memories as a solace for your grief.
I cannot promise he will stay since all from Earth return,
But there are lessons taught below I want this child to learn."

"I've looked this whole world over in my search for teachers true,
and from the things that crowd life's lane, I have chosen YOU.
Now will you give him all your love nor think the labor vain?
Nor hate me when I come to take this lent child back again?"

"I fancied that I heard I heard them say," 'Dear God - Thy will be done.
For all the joys Thy child will bring the risk of grief we'll run.
We will shelter him with tenderness, we'll love while we may,
And for the happiness we've known forever grateful stay.
But should Thy Angels call for him much sooner than we'd planned,
We'll brave the bitter grief that comes and try to understand.'"

Oh, how we laughed! Dimitrios could make a very stressful day so much brighter. I loved to hear about his trips, his new apartment, his family and his adventures. I had the priviledge and honour of working with Dmitiri at the Surgical Daycare Centre at VGH. He offered such dignified, respectful and outstanding care to his patients, I was always proud to be a member of his team, but it was his sparkling eyes, broad smile and sense of humour that made me want to work with him. He had such a love and passion for his family that earned him the nickname "Uncle Mimi" and I always looked forward to hearing his humourous annecdotes of his trips home to see his growing nephews. He will be sorely missed, and my condolences to a family that will surely miss him achingly.

Dmitri holds a very special place in my heart and memories. As one of my 5 fellow Residents in Anesthesia at VGH, we spent many hours together in the last year of our Residency in 2000. We all loved being with Dmitri. He had a special sense of humour that was infectious and got us all through some of the tough times. Dmitri loved to share stories and I treasure the memories of his shining eyes and quick wit relating an experience which enriched my day. Dmitri added colour, interest, & wonder to my days as a Resident - which I felt again immediately when I last spoke to him about 10 months ago. Dmitri, I shall miss those times together, but know you are sharing them with some other lucky souls! I've never met your family, but I can see that they know how lucky they were to have you! xox my friend.

Dear Giannoulis family, I read with a sad heart of Jim's passing today. I attended elementary school at Nellie McClung with Jim some 30 years ago. He would give me a ride home on his bike eventhough I lived only 4 or 5 houses from school. Looking back now I remember him as an easy going, friendly, kindhearted boy. But I am sure as a girl of 8, I more than likely liked him because he was simply "nice". I think of him whenever we dine at Caesars, I tell my husband that I once knew the son of the owner (whether or not my memory is correct, that is how I remember your family, the owners of Caesars)

I hope you can find some comfort in knowing Jim is warmly remembered by those whose lives he has crossed, even those from 30 years ago.

Sincerely, Michelle Roworth (Huse)
