Dr. Dirk Appel

Dr.Dirk Appel will always be a special friend to my husband Dave Balmer and me. He was the smartest and kindest man ever.
Dave worked with him at Thermo
Electron and Dirk graciously took us out on his sloop on boston harbor.
Dave and i will always think of him and miss such a wonderful man and scientist

I had the pleasure of working with Dirk for over 20 years and I will miss him terribly.

Dirk always had a great demeanor, even with his sickness, and was always upbeat whenever I asked him how he was doing.

I was one of the "porketta" group and always looked forward to sharing this time with Dr. D......

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you in this mournful time but knowing that you will all be together at a better time and place will help to heal the hurt!!

I grew to know and like Dirk over the years. His guidence was always aprechiated. He will be missed.

Please accept my sincere condolences, and as you said, we all at Thermo will remember and celebrate Dirk's life during this time.

Dirk hired me in 1982 and taught me how to be an instrument designer. His own designs were characterized by a beautiful simplicity that hid the complexity within. I have tried to follow those principles in my own designs, and am passing that on to a new generation of scientists and engineers at Thermo. That will be a small part of Dirk's legacy.

I can tell many stories about Dirk - too many for this note - but I will always remember his support during some difficult times, both at work and at home. During Debby's battle with cancer, he was a source of inspiration and courage to both of us and I can not thank him enough for that.

It was a privilege to know and work with Dirk. It was and is still inspiring to have watched a master in his craft. Even with all he had been going through he still enjoyed his work, going out to eat and good conversation. I will remember him always. My deepest condolences to his family.

Having been touched by his intelligence and buoyed by his knowledge, Dirk is greatly missed.

These are the qualities I think of when remembering Dirk. It was great working together and learning from him. I will remember him always.

I've only known Dirk for the last four years through work. We had many in depth conversations around a specific project for Coca-Cola. This project was my opportunity to be awed by his genius and enjoy his forth right opinions & sense of humor. Over the last few months when my family said Grace before dinner we were sure to keep Dirk in our Prayers. May God's Grace hold him now and look over all who were fortunate to have known him that now deal with the whole he leaves behind. I will miss him dearly. Tim

Along with his obvious intelligence, his personality, with quick wit and humor, made him a special person and enjoyable to be around. I will miss him. My condolences go out to his wife and family.
