Dominique Tardif Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 21, 2025.
Dominique Joseph Tardif Jr. affectionately known as "D.J." or "Joey," passed away peacefully on May 16, 2025, due to complications from injuries sustained in a house fire. He was 79 years old.

Born in Lewiston, Maine, on April 8, 1946, Dominique was the devoted son of the late Dominique J. Tardif and Muriel Minihane Tardif. He shared a close bond with his sisters, Patricia Crowley & the late Fern Desjardin.

As a young adult, "D.J." left Maine to attend Leland Powers School of Radio, Theatre, and Television where he graduated in 1966.

He worked for WHDH-TV Boston as assistant director on a number of in-house productions including the station's Red Sox programming, and the Bozo the Clown Show. A morning shoot on Cape Ann brought him to Rockport, where he planted roots and started Bearskin Neck Leathers in 1974. He cared deeply about quality and connection and operated his business ("To the left! on Bearskin Neck") for 49 years.

"D.J." was an active member of the community. He belonged to the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce for 32 years and served on the board of directors in the early 90s. A second generation Rotarian, he valued serving others and rarely missed a meeting of the Rockport Rotary Club. He sponsored youth athletic teams & donated his time during the holidays to The Salvation Army & local food pantry.

Dominique is survived by his four children, Tyla Tardif and her fiancé Jacob Kipp of Kingston New Hampshire; Nathanael Tardif and his wife Katherine Tardif of Gloucester; Sarah Tardif of Gloucester; Russell Amero and his wife Maggie Amero of Gloucester; his sister Patricia Crowley of Yarmouth Maine, and his five grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his sister, Fern Desjardin.

A mass and a celebration of life will be held at a later date.

So very for you and our loss.
I knew DJ from Rotary starting in the 1970s and just purchased some slippers from him the beginning of the year from the house.
Always a great smile with soooo many stories.
Especially about joining his Dad on Rotary trips up North.
May God Bless you all and may DJ RIP. Rotarily, Lee

So sorry to hear of DJ´s passing. I worked for him back in the 70´s when he took me on as a worker making deerskin items for Stanley Hyde above The Framery on School St. He was a good guy and ran SH successfully for many years; always enjoyed stopping by to catch up.

It was always nice to see DJ in the shop. My daughter worked there for several years, and he was always friendly, and called me "Mom" until the last time I saw him. RIP, DJ. I´ll never walk down the Neck w/o thinking of you.

My family sends the most heartfelt condolences to the Tardif family.
DJ was one of the first friends we made when we moved to Rockport in 1986. He made a special delivery on Christmas Eve in a snowstorm to my house with a leather coat I bought for my husband. DJ was kind, funny, never afraid tell it "like it is", a dedicated Rotarian - we had fun. It is sad to think of not seeing DJ around town. And, his spunky spirit is everywhere.

DJ was my Bearskin Neck neighbor for 45 years, and it was always a pleasure to encounter him. His friendly greeting and smiling face were as bright and welcoming as the sunflowers he carefully tended, and his offers of help were always there. It was a gift to have him nearby. To his loved ones - know that he was cherished by the community he did a lot to create.

It is hard to imagine DJ gone. He was so full of life over the years we knew him. He gave our daughter Tessa a start in the world of work. We would always pop in for a chat whenever we were at Bearskin Neck. He was kind, funny and so interested in us, as a family, and in particularly Tessa as she grew up and took the skills she learned from working in the Leather Shop with her in the jobs that followed. We are so grateful for his role in her life and having known him all these years. Our condolences to the family, he left a big hole in the lives of so many that is impossible to fill.

Dear DJ's Family!

We are so incredibly saddened to hear about the passing of DJ. He was a truly special person, and we'll miss him dearly.

It was always such a pleasure TO HELP OUT whenever DJ ASKED FOR ASSISTANCE WITH HIS TECH AT THE SHOP.
We really enjoyed helping him out with all of his tech needs, big or small. He always had a good story to share and a laugh that would fill the room. We appreciated his trust in us and the genuine conversations we shared.

DJ will be so surely missed by all of us here. Our thoughts are with you during this difficult time.

With deepest sympathy,

ADAM / AOP3D TECH

It´s difficult to find words that properly convey the kindness, the spirit, the honesty in his smile. His passing leaves a void that simply cannot be filled. From the first time I met him to the last time we chatted, I can say without hesitation that each time we talked was meaningful. We could share laughter, anger, caring, frustration and anything else without judgement of each other. I´ll miss his wry humor, and honest commentary. What a loss.

D J was always kind and generous to me, was a long time friend to my father Neal Jacobs who was also in the shoe business. Both were concerned with our community. DJs loss is very sad for his family and us all.

I met DJ in 1975 when I bought my first pair of Frye boots from him instead of from Walter Dyer! We became instant friends from that moment on. We laughed together, cried together, watched our children grow up and graduate together and recently shared photos of our grandchildren together. I loved him for his kindness, his silliness, his charm and for the ever present twinkle in his eyes. He was my forever friend and I will miss him. And so Tyla, Sarah, Daniel and Rusty, I am heartbroken and devastated for you all. I share in your grief. I hold you all in my heart. Love Always... Karen (Moore) Ellis
