I first saw Don pitch in relief in 1970 and was in awe. I followed his career while in the Navy and never missed a game at old San Diego Stadium, L.A., and S.F. I have two autographed baseball cards. Don would have pitched longer with today's medical staffs but the short time we had him was wonderful. RIP Don and to his entire family, God Bless.

My first memory of Don was as a freshman at McKell High School in South Shore, Ky. He was my classmate. He was a kind young man and excelled at all sports. The last time I saw Donna´s talked to him was at our 50th reunion. Even with all the fame and notoriety he´d been blessed with, he was still the same kind man. I am so sorry you had to give him up at such a young age Kathy. My heart was so sad when I heard the new that he´d passed. I´m sure he´s in heaven with all his and your loved ones which gives you a little comfort but it doesn´t make the hurt any less. I´ve been praying for you, your children and grandchildren. I´ve been asking God to give you and your family comfort that only He can give thru this and strength to get through the days without him.
Your Friend,

Don Was One of my childhood Heroes. Growing up in the early seventies, and Loving the Big Red Machine. Don's Hard throwing style made me want to be a pitcher. I was a Lefty like Don, and I Dreamed of throwing hard like him, and playing for the Cincinnati Reds. Fast Forward to the late nineties, and I was promoting an annual Cincinnati Reds Legends youth Baseball camp in my home town of Marietta, Ohio for my four sons, and the community children. Don was the Reds pitching coach then, and I reached out to him by letter about attending the camp. To come to Marietta to teach the children in our little town the finer points of pitching. To my delightful surprise, Don gave me a call on the phone, and I arranged for his first appearance at my Reds Legends Camp. Don was everything I expected him to be, and more when meeting him personally for the first time in 2003. Down to earth, friendly, and a Super instructor for the kids. Well, Don and I hit it off from the start. Don became a regular at the camp from 2003 - 2017. Over the years Don became a good friend of my family, and a wonderful teacher and Grandfather figure to my children. He was even kind enough to invite Myself, and my three sons over to South Shore a few times during the winters. Where he would work out with us in his friends garage. Streamlining the boys pitching mechanics, and just being an outstanding role model of work ethic, and overall kindness for the boys. These were some of the greatest memories that me, and my sons ever made together. We have talked about it for over twenty years now. Recalling those long Saturdays that we made the trip to Don's to work out, and me, Dad always getting my hand blown up from catching my fireballer sons for two to three hours. Every year when Don would come to the camp. It was as if we had just seen him on a daily basis. We would always just pick up right where we left off. Don was also a super inspiration to the community children of the Marietta area who had the wonderful opportunity to meet him at the camp each year, and receive a golden treasure chest of tips, and knowledge from a real hard throwing pro, who had played on the biggest stage of the world...Sometimes Don would even go to dinner with my family after the day's camp was over, and treat us with baseball stories. When I think of Don, I think first of the man, who was such a great, and kind person. And a wonderful friend of our family. I think of baseball second. Even though he was a great pitcher, and teacher of the game. He was a better friend, man, and force of positive work ethic. I feel so very Blessed that God put Don in my life. His presence at my camp, and being there for my children is way more than I could have ever asked for. I am forever grateful for his kindness to my family, and the difference he made in the life of my four sons. Rest in peace Don. You will be missed forever by the Wagner Family, and the Cincinnati Reds Legends youth Baseball camp.

GREAT pitcher, who threw very hard. Extraordinary career stats, and Johnny Bench's X post (on Don's passing) reveals just how special an athlete and teammate Don was. A vital contributor for 2 storied teams, who won World Series championships during Don's stint with each. Don's playing career ended at a relatively young age, but it was clear that he consistently gave it his all on the field of play.
