Nancy and family,

I was sorry to hear of the passing of your Dad. I have very good memories of our friendship in High School and always coming to Hires and talking with you and your Dad when I come to Salt Lake to visit. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time.

Mark,

I was sorry to hear of the passing of your Dad. While I did not know him personally, I know he had a big influence on Salt Lake City's restaurant scene over the years. I know Hire's Big H won't quite be the same without him but you will all continue on knowing that his spirit will always be there with you. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this difficult time.

Don, I feel like a major part of my life has passed along with you. I grew up being a daily child customer at Hales Market buying candy from Glen, or Olive. Then as a teen you offered me a job at Hires Drive In. It was a great 16 years of my life! We were all a small close knit hardworking family with lot's of wonderful memories made. We loved our customers and it showed! Hires hasn't been the same without your smiling face adding up the carhop tickets or running the cash register the past few years, nor will it ever be again. All I could think of when I looked at your lifeless body today with tears in my eyes, was what a great reunion in heaven with Shirley and how happy you both must be! I know your family will carry on the tradition that you so put your heart and soul in to. Jon, you were always so awsum to work with at Hires. I know your father is so proud of you and how hard you work. Don, You will be greatly missed!!

Mark and Julie,
We want you to know what an honor it has been to know Don, especially in the recent past as we talked with him when we visited with Carol’s Mother. We know Don is enjoying the reunion he is having with Shirley and those others in his family that went on before him. We pray that the Lord will bless you and your family with his tender mercies.

So Don it seems like we’ve traveled the scenic route together. It was many years ago but I still remember the 1st time that we met and you drove me to Hires. I loved the idea that you handpicked me, it made me feel special and to that end I did my best for you. I want to call it baby steps because that’s what it felt like, you with your fairly new business and me with my fairly new job description. You were always trying new recipes; I know you made me taste the creations. Pounds later I can say that it paid off, we watched as Hires grew and became the place to dine. We had everybody patronizing Hires movie stars, sports stars, politicians, doctors, lawyers and thieves (Ha Ha). The birds would even land on the trays because they heard about our hand cut fries. Over the twenty-two years that I spent with you I grew to know the business, the customers and the employees that not only worked there but built relationships that have lasted a lifetime. How simple times were then, we not only lived in the 60’s we were the original Happy Day Stars.
Thank you for your leadership, guidance and most of all the memories.
Our Era has passed, I’ll miss you
Mildred

As young children, my siblings and I used to visit Hale Market and Hires Drive-In. We would always stop and chat with Don. It seemed as though he were a dear Uncle. He was always concerned and interested in what we were doing. He was never too busy to talk. We've all continued with this tradition with our own children over the years. What a great man, what an incredible legacy he leaves behind. He will be missed.

The world is a happier, better place because of the Hale Family. Don was a great Patriarch who was a wonderful example of dedication to worthwhile things. Not everyone becomes a living legend during his/her lifetime, but Don Hale surely did. Our lives have been touched for good by him and his family. Thanks to him and to his family for many happy memories for many years. He will be missed.

My love to the Hale family. I remember Don as Bishop Hale. What a loving and humble man who gave service to so many. I remember Shirley with fondness as a kind and elegant lady. What a joyful reunion for the two of them!

Don was a wonderful neighbor and friend. I will always remember how he helped when Marilyn had our first child by bringing us groceries from Hales Market. He would take our kids for a ride to Hires to scout out the number of cars in the competitor's lots and then give them a root beer in a mug. I am very sorry for your loss. He was a wonderful neighbor and will always be remembered and missed by all.

Don and Shirley were part of a number of people who frequented Little America's counter for supper. What a rich experience to converse with them and share some serious talk also.
Later I had occasion to deal with Don while serving as City Architect. Don's wisdom was always appreciated. My condolences to his wonderful family! May the Lord continue to bless you!

The cutest thing I ever saw...Was a son bringing his father in for a bowl of Market Street clam chowder. My heart goes out to the entire Hale Family..

I will never forget Don and his example of goodness and a giving attitude. He will be missed by all. His family is a monument to his goodness and example. I can never eat a Hire's hamburger or Litzas Pizza without thinking of the hard work and creativity to achieve their production.l Don, thanks for your friendship and example.

My sincere condolensces to the Hale family. I remember as a child going with my parents, Jack & Helen Barrett to Hale's Market, then later eating at Hires when it opened. Don was always so happy and welcoming to all he would meet. Although I no longer live in SLC, a trip back home is never complete without a stop at Hires.. and if Don were there, he would take time to visit. He was a wonderful person and I know will be missed by everyone.

My condolences to each of you, in the loss of this tremendous man. My life has been so blessed from knowing, and loving Brother Hale. Although our acquaintance was very brief, in that amount of time, he provided genuine love and concern for my family. The lessons he taught us, his example, his knowledge and dedication to the gospel, is something I’ll never forget. His love for people was amazing. I know I will never forget him, nor his wife Shirley who also was a blessing in our lives. I feel blessed to have known such a choice individual.

Don and I invested in a few growth companies during the 70's at a time when the markets were wild. I had nothing but great experiences with Don. He was professional, innovative, and brought to the table higher standards than we usaully find in entrepeneurs these days.
Don was giuded by a moral compass that I greatly appreciated when dealing with him. He was a great man; diligent and faithful to his beleifs. He will be missed and the Lord knows we need more men like him.
