My first meeting with Don occurred back in 1975 when he came to Michigan to pay his respects to a mentor and former coach of his, Mert (George) Wallace, and he was bigger than life having heard all the stories of his athletic career.

I have shared this with Kris
The first time I attended a service at Crossway I walked in looked around and of course sat on the back row. Don sat next to me. We had met before, working with getting him set up on his bike. From the beginning we connected and he was giving me advice and telling me jokes. That morning as we sat next to each other, he started pointing and said, so up front there, that's my son, that's my grandson, that's his wife, over there that's my other son and there's my daughter-in-law and so on! He said, I think about half the church is related to me. We both paused, he had that big smile on his face and I said wow! you think you could have got better seats! He just gave me a hug. We never sat in the back again. Love and miss you Don!!!!
