Don Sutton

I was nineteen years old when I was at the Dodger game with my friends, sitting in the outfield next to the bullpen when Don Sutton and Mudcat Grant (Jim Grant) told me to come down to the bullpen to go out to the field. They handed me a bat, and both pitched to me, and of course I never connected with that bat even as they got close to me. My friends took pictures that I still treasure, and a ball. I will never forget the kindness.

In 1969, I was 12 years old and visiting my Godparents who lived in L.A. They took me to a Dodgers game. I brought my glove. During warmups I asked Don Sutton for a ball. He threw me a ball and we started playing catch. I was in awe! I still have the ball and plastic Dodger helmet they bought me. Thank you for a great memory Don! Kindness goes a long way.

I was lucky to meet Don on two occasions. At a baseball camp in 1984, he was the first major league baseball player I had seen in person. I was surprised he was not ten feet tall. Tony Gwynn and Alan Trammell were also normal-sized. They were all real people. Nice people. That's what I remember from camp.

A few months later, Don spoke at a business convention I was working part-time. I worked up the courage to say hello after his appearance and told him I had met him at the San Diego School of baseball the previous winter.

I was a teenage pitcher, not a prospect by any stretch, but Don spent 10 minutes talking with me. Just me. A nobody. I never forgot that.

As a Braves fan, I had many opportunities to tell the story about meeting Don. I ultimately made it to college baseball which helped me understand just how skilled real ballplayers are. I knew he was a 300 game winner, a hall of famer, but I was shocked to read Don's MLB statistics again. Don was so down to earth and kind that it was hard to imagine him as a competitive beast that won 324 big league games.

I am upset that I never sent Don a note when I heard that health issues had interrupted his announcing duties with the Braves. I am sure there are a thousand people, undoubtedly more, that have a story similar to mine, but I regret not thanking Don personally. Having just lost my own father, I hope his family gets to hear from as many people Don influenced as possible.

Don was a great pitcher, wonderful broadcaster, but his real legacy, as I see it, is a reminder of how small acts of kindness matter. Don's body passed on, but he shared a light that lives on in my soul, and assuredly, countless others he met along the way.

I met Don in Atlanta in 1989. I did his mortgage for his new home. Don and I had breakfast several times and talked baseball. I pitched in college so the conversations were fun. Don was one of the greatest pitchers and sports announcers of our time. He also was gracious and took the time to visit my bank and spend time with the staff.

He was my favorite pitcher growing up. And always was a class act.

Loved to watch the man pitch. A real artist. I have been a life-long Dodger fan. Rough start to 2021, losing both Tommy Lasorda and Don Sutton in such short order. But having said that, they both provided lots of great memories. RIP and may the Lord shine upon you.

My favorite Dodger player! My favorite baseball player! He made a great impression on my sons and encouraged them to follow their dreams. A friendship I will treasure forever. Praying for peace to surround his family at this time.

R.I.P. my friend.. I remember our school days in Molino, Florida where we met about 1955. I recall us being on the Escambia River fishing together, as well as playing ball in the parking lot at Molino Methodist Church.

Never forget you Don. Wonderful teammate, great competitor, talented broadcaster, world class friend and Christian gentleman. So glad we had a chance to talk and laugh together once again in 2017.

My condolences go out to the family of Don Sutton. What a pitcher. He will be missed by family and baseball fans.

This young man touched so many residents of Vero Beach whem he was here with the "DODGERS". A great memory of his humble interactions with fans as he walked back across DODGERTOWN to the Player's Clubhouse. Thank you for the great memories as a young baseball fan living the dream in Vero Beach.

My prayers are offered up for his family. There's a school I used to teach at, and I got to coach baseball there for awhile. And after the games, I'd go down to watch and root for the softball squad, which featured among others a firey, take-no-prisoners LEFT-HANDED catcher. I'd sit there sometimes, in our fold-out chairs, talking about the game with a couple of regulars. Turns out one couple was the Suttons. I have nothing but respect for him and his family.

Mr Sutton came to Milwaukee Children’s with the Brewers and one time he and his wife came and read stories to the children on the Hematology, Oncology unit I worked in as a new nurse. Thank you! He was very nice to the kids and their families.

I met Don when we played against each other in high school. He made a point to talk with me after the game. We became friends at Gulf Coast , not only in baseball , but in basketball. Don was our statistician and drove one the station wagons on road trips. I have many wonderful memories of that year. It's very sad to lose one of our Green Mansion Gang. My thoughts and prayers are with the family. God Bless.

Don was a consummate pitcher from first day he stepped on a mound...he was a competitor and an artist. He used cunning and guile to dispose of hitters, as opposed to unhittable pitches...and he did it year after year ! He loved his craft and he lived the dream he had as a boy. I am so proud to say I was a teammate, even fir one single season, Don’s first and only season in College. God Bless Don Sutton and his family...and may he Rest In Peace !

He was a great pitcher, great announcer & a nice man. I met once in a hotel bar Cincinnati briefly. We talked about the game a little. I saw him the next am in hotel lobby. I said hi, he stopped, but down his attache case, spoke with me, and gave he his autograph. I was just a regular fan. What a nice man!! I will always treasure that moment.

Don Sutton was one of the all time greats on the field. In the broadcast booth he was a positive ambassador for baseball. I will long remember his many games behind the radio mike that he entertained us all. Listening to Braves baseball will never be the same. He will forever be missed.

Don was a generous and kind person. He always related to each person to make that person feel special and appreciated. All of his achievements are a matter of record, but he will also be remembered for relating to everybody. He made my father feel special by saying Happy Birthday on his 70th birthday. That was one of his many kind gestures over the years. As a baseball fan that was a great memory for my father. Love to Don's family at this difficult time.

I grew up listening to baseball on the radio. As an adult Don rekindled my interest in listening on the radio. Just a joy to listen. Could feel his kindness as well as love for the game over the airways.

I am saddened to hear of Mr. Sutton's passing. He was one of my favorite Dodgers. May Jehovah comfort his loved ones!

Don anchored the Dodgers' rotation when I became as baseball fan, and I loved his work ethic. Never missed a start. Had a chance to meet him when I was in elementary school in 1978 and he got a job working for KNBC TV in the offseason of 1978. Solid guy and a pro in every sense of the word. I followed his career throughout and was so happy when he won his 300th here in So Cal. My thoughts are with his family on their loss. He was one of the greats.

I was born in 1965 so Don was in his prime all the time when I was growing up and I remember all the epic battles that he and the Dodgers had with the Yankees in the World Series and I always cheered for him and the Dodgers because I was then and am now a fan of the Kansas City Royals.

I was a rookie at Dodgertown when I first met Don. He took me under his wing. He was an established star but still had the ability to be friends with everyone. He even took my wife for groceries when our car was in the shop. He was a gentleman at every level. He will be missed. My condolences to the Sutton family.

Life long Braves fan, always will remember growing up listening to him, Skip Caray, Pete Van Weiren and Joe Simpson calling the games. Learned so much from listening to them. Definitely a sad day in baseball.

Saddened to hear of Don's passing. He was such a nice guy. While he was a Braves broadcaster, I took him some cornflake cookies a couple times, he loved them so much I renamed them "sutton's cookies".. and thought of him when I made some this past Christmas. Rest in Peace Don, you will be remembered and missed.

Gave & signed a baseball for me. 'Vic, my best always' DS. Ques to Walter Alston, what do ya think of Don Sutton, in minors ? " He's recoilless ." Don holds 2 Dodger records, most wins & losses. Hold 1 MLB record. 1336 at bats, without a home run. Big D only won 20 once also.

Remembering Don's contribution to the Brewers only year they made it to the World Series. I remember being very excited when the announcement was made that Don was coming to Milwaukee.

Boy, this is extremely sad and shocking news. Saw Don pitch many many times. At Dodger Stadium, and later at Candlestick Park after I moved north and the Dodgers visited SF. Loved Don's work as an analyst for the Braves, too.

Don was a master pitcher; an assessment that has been made by many. Including Gene Mauch. Don's strong clutch outing, when he pitched for the Brewers, beat Mauch's mighty Angel lineup in the '82 ALCS. And Don pitched for Mauch in Anaheim, a few years later. Legendary curveball (and his other "stuff" was great, too), excellent control/"location," and exceptional preparation and smarts. Watching Don pitch was.a study in poise, professionalism, talent, and the art of "setting up" and "finishing off" a hitter.

Thank you, Don. For the terrific pitching and television work, and for providing a wonderful part of the baseball viewing life for so many. Our memories of your play, and presence, will always be long and fond.

In abt. 1971 I went to a function where baseball legend Don Sutton was a guest speaker. There was time given for guest questions. I raised my hand and he took my question. I asked him how he would pitch to Roberto Clemente. He replied, "Very Carefully.)" I will never forget his curly hair, gentle smile, and kindness that radiated toward others. Just learned his middle name, making it even more special. May his family be comforted with his dedication, and kindness for others.

I wouldnt be the diehard fan I am in South Dakota without Don. My sincerest condolences to the Sutton family and the Braves organization. Don was family and he made me love the game as much as he did. Rest in peace.

Don Sutton was one of the Dodgers
best pitchers in his prime. What a shock it was to hear he passed away ? Only the great Sandy Koufax remain as the lone Hall of Famer still living & he is almost 91.

A great playing career marked by unbelievable consistency. An exemplary announcer for the Braves, Sutton provided much in the way of insight, particularly on the subject of pitching. I enjoyed his time in the broadcasting for Atlanta. He will be sorely missed!

a great player and announcer, always recall Suttons rule of 3 every team will loose a third of games, win a third of games, what the team does in remaining third, determines final standing. A Fan who loved to listen to his announcing the games on tv as well as radio.

I met Don Sutton twice in my life. Once in Chattanooga at a caravan just before the 1991 season and again in Atlanta at Turner Field in 2013. He was really nice to me and I’ll never forget it. Gonna miss Don. Rest In Peace!
