Donald Aucoin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 20, 2009.
BANGOR - Donald Eyves Aucoin Jr., 57, died peacefully June 14, 2009, at his home. He was born March 17, 1952, in Bangor, the only son of Donald E. Aucoin Sr. and Eleanor Aucoin. At birth Don's life was expected to be a short one. In reality he lived long and prospered. Don overcame one medical issue after another from atrial septal defect, blocked pulmonary artery, muscular dystrophy and diabetes. Don never let any of these conditions limit him and perhaps because of them his strong love for the study of science developed. He focused on his aptitudes and was a learner and a teacher to the best of his abilities all his life. He always tried to give back to his community including; volunteering many hours each year to Northeast COMBAT, now CONTACT, serving as a local NASA Solar System Ambassador to help educate local people about NASA activities, serving as a greeter at Saint Mary's Catholic Church, becoming in 2006 a professed Secular Franciscan, helping each year with the MDA telethon and being honored with their 2008 Robert Ross MDA Personal Achievement Award. For 26 years, Don served on the USS Kasimar, a local Star Trek fan/service club. For much of this time he was the chief science officer and at the time of his death was the group's commanding officer. Don told friends he believed "I had a good life in spite of the health problems, so I can't complain. John Denver had a song with the words, "I'd like to raise a family, I'd like to sail away and dance across the mountains on the moon. "Well, I got the family, and I got to sail several times, dancing across the mountain on the moon just wasn't possible. But only 12 people have had that pleasure." Don is survived by his wife of 11 years, Sharon; his stepdaughter, Rebecca Gallagher; his parents, Donald Sr. and Eleanor; five sisters, Stephanie and Jim Mooney, Nadine and John Higgins, Stacy and Pat Vandyne, Celeste Harriman, Dedrea and Randy Pavliska; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and Red Sox and Star Trek fans across the country. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. June 24 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Ohio Street, Bangor. There will be a reception afterwards at the church. Burial will be in Glenburn.

Don, it has been a great blessing to know you all these years. You are a good friend, a man of faith and of many gifts and talents. I still remember our group when we shared about our spiritual journeys. There has never been a group of this kind since. Just to let you know again how much I enjoy your writings, especially both myths that spoke of life and relationship. They are wonderful! I can still see your bright face when you told me you met a wonderful woman, Sharon. A short time later I was privileged to perform your marriage, my first. You and Sharon are a unique couple. And who can forget Becky, the sweet young woman who is so much your daughter.

Don, I know you live, because Love is eternal. I will never forget you.

I remember the day very well when Madyson was learning to drive her power wheelchair at Maine Rehab Center and we met Don in the hallway. Madyson was very happy to meet someone else in a power chair and Don always put a smile on her face. We will miss him at telethon. He was a huge part of the MDA community and I know we are not the only ones who will miss him. I am so sorry for your loss. He was a great man and an inspiration to many. Madyson and our whole family were very sad to hear that he made his journey to heaven but we know that he will be happy there with God.

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to Don's family and many many friends. I had many great talks with Don over the years and he always Amazed me at his strength and courage when it came to his health issues. Each day is a gift and I'm going to enjoy them all he said. We both relished the 2 RED SOX wins in 04' and 07' Don was a very knowledgable baseball fan. He was a devout Catholic and good husband. I always felt better after speaking with Don about my spinal cord injury. His voice was a calming voice and he gave me strength to continue on. He passed on his wisdom ,his knowledge ,his philosophy on life and most of all his love for his good friends. Thank you Don and May God Bless You.

Dear Tiki and Becky,
It was with a great sense of loss when I heard of Don's passing. I wanted to let you know that you have my greatest sympathy, and my heart is truly saddened. And, we know that his passing will not only leave a void in your lives, but in the hearts of all those who knew him. Don will always remain within the hearts of everyone he knew him, and we have included Don, you and Becky in our daily prayers. May God give you strength and comfort during this difficult time. May eternal rest be granted to him, Dear Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon him. Dearest Tiki, I am so sad to get this news. It has always been such a joy to hear from you and what you, Don and Becky were up to. Always joy and friendship entwined between your emails as you told me of your latest exploits, or books you guys were reading or craft shows. And how we tried and tried to get together.
My whole family sends their prayers, sympathy and love to you and all of Don's family. You were all blessed to have this gift of God's in your life, and now God said I want Don back with Me in eternal happiness and glory. My heart is filled with tears, but also joy celebrating Don's life anew in heaven with Jesus and Mary and all the angels and saints he so often prayed to. Sending love and prayers and a smile thinking of his beam up! It must have been awesome for him.

I met Don at Bangor Community College many years ago. He had an iron determination and steely will which, wrapped within his intellect, gentle spirit and humor made him one of the most unforgettable people I have ever met. As Don has been beamed up, may his famiily and friends find comfort in the prayers following him and surrounding them at this time.

My deepest sympathy at Donnie's passing. I will always remember his love of the Beetles, his quick wit and dry sense of humor back in our old band days. May God grant him eternal peace and give you all the strength to carry on .

Don will be deeply missed. A friend for
over thirty years, Don had a passion for science that impacted me to this day. I will remember Don as a strong advocate for disabled rights and a loyal Red Sox fan. God bless and my sympathy to Don's family.
