Don was an inspiration and shared his knowledge through excellent example.
There was never a dull moment when Don was around, his smile and good nature would light up the room.
On the ski slopes, I tried to keep up with him. Don could carve a quick turn no matter how difficult the conditions.
Don was one of those unique individuals that helped me be a better person.

In remembrance of Don, I find myself reflecting on the profound impact he had on my life and career. Don was a discrete mentor, a guiding light in my early years in the federal govt. His unwavering respect for my culture and his belief in my potential were both empowering and humbling.

Don took me under his wing at a time when I was navigating a new and challenging environment. He patiently showed me how to manage and archive journalist stories electronically, offering invaluable insights that greatly shaped my professional skills. His trust in me extended beyond the office; he invited me to assist at the GOP convention in Houston, an opportunity that allowed me to grow and learn in ways I hadn't imagined.

Despite my background coming from a mountainous landlocked country, Don´s kindness and inclusiveness shone brightly. When the team of journalists, who had originally only included him, planned a deep-sea fishing trip in Houston at the presidential convention, Don made sure I was included. That experience was not just a memorable adventure but also a testament to his generosity and his belief in fostering connections beyond the professional realm. It was, in fact, the only time I have ever gone fishing, and it remains a cherished memory.

Don´s mentorship extended beyond immediate work-related guidance. He helped me craft my resume and encouraged me to seek opportunities beyond the confines of VOA. His insight and encouragement were instrumental in pushing me to apply for Foreign Service Officer positions. Following his advice, I took the leap and am now honored to serve as a Senior Foreign Service Officer. This achievement is a direct result of Don´s belief in my talent and his commitment to seeing me succeed.

Eight years ago, I had the privilege of seeing Don again, alongside colleagues like AL Brown, John Ederma, Debbie Gibson, and Petrella Robinson. It was a poignant reminder of the positive impact he had on so many lives.

Don was an incredibly kind man and the epitome of what is good in humanity. His genuine advocacy for underrepresented people, his respect, and his mentorship exemplified the best qualities of humanity and the true face of America that I encountered early in my federal career.

Rest in peace, Don. Your legacy of empowerment, encouragement, and kindness continues to inspire and guide me. Thank you for everything.

Myy deepest condolences to Barth family,
Rahima Kandahari
