WEST YARMOUTH — Donald J. Burns, 86, of West Yarmouth, died on Nov. 3, 2008, at Essex Pavilion in Hyannis.

He was husband of the late Marjorie (Smith) Burns, who died in February of this year.

Born and raised in Worcester, he enlisted in the Navy prior to graduation from South High School in Worcester. He served during World War II from December 1941 until February 1945, and spent time on PT 563 as a gunner's mate. He received his GED after the war and then graduated from Ward's Business School in Worcester. He graduated with the 33rd training troop of the Massachusetts State Police in April of 1948 and worked as a motorcycle trooper out of the Brookfield Barracks. Following his service with the state police, he worked with the Worcester Credit Union prior to retiring to Cape Cod in 1980.

He leaves three daughters, Patricia L'Heureux of Hyannis, Maureen Handel of West Hyannisport and Tracy Cooney of Worcester. He also leaves seven grandchildren and was father of the late Donna Burns.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, Nov. 7, at 11 a.m., at St. Pius X Church, South Yarmouth. Visitation will be held at the Morris & O'Connor Funeral Home, 58 Long Pond Drive, South Yarmouth, beginning at 9 a.m., prior to the funeral Mass. Burial will be in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne, at 2:30 p.m.
