Donald Groff Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 31, 2024.
Donald J. "Don" Groff

Passed away peacefully at home Monday, October 28th, 2024 at the age of 98. He is survived by his loving wife of fifty years Bonnie, his daughters Lynn, Lisa, Ruth, and Mary Kay and his sons James and Mark. He is further survived by his brother Jack, eight grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

Don was preceded in death by his first wife Mary, his infant son Stephen, and his parents Frank and Ellen.

Don was born in Milwaukee April 9th, 1926. He attended Saint Sebastian grade school, Marquette University High School (class of 1944) and the University of Michigan graduating with a degree in metallurgical engineering. Don enjoyed a long and successful career as a foundry executive.

Don was an honorable member of America's greatest generation. Don served in the Navy in both World War II and in the Korean War.

Don was a fifty-year resident of Elm Grove, WI and Saint Mary's Visitation Catholic Church where he served as an usher for over thirty-five years.

Don's priorities in life were his Catholic faith, his family, and all things sports. Don and his best friend Bonnie spent countless hours since his retirement working together in their beloved garden. The common thread in Don's long life was his boundless humility. His life was truly spent in the service of others. Don always remembered your name if you were fortunate enough to meet him.

The family would like to thank the caregivers at Vitas for the home hospice care Don received in the final months of his life.

Visitation will be at St. Mary's Visitation 1260 Church Street Elm Grove, WI 53122 on Tuesday, November 5th, 2024 10:00-11:00 immediately followed by a Memorial Mass at 11:00. Don donated his body to the Medical College of Wisconsin in the hopes of making a difference for others, one last time.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation, in Don's name, to his revered Marquette University High School.

My sincere condolences to the Groff family. Ruth was in my class at St Jude School, where Mrs. Bonnie Groff (then Mrs. Reinholdt) was my wonderful teacher, the best I ever had. I am so sorry for your loss. In Sympathy, Joe Spoerl (St Jude Class of 1973)

I remember Uncle Don and his lovely, wonderful smile. He brought so much light into any room he occupied and know that he truly loved Auntie Bonnie.
