BEVERLY — Donald P. Horgan, 79, of Beverly and formerly of Danvers, died peacefully Thursday, March 19, 2009 at Massachusetts General Hospital while surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of the late Patricia (Reynolds) Horgan.
Born in Danvers, he was the son of the late James and Julia (McCarthy) Horgan. Donald was educated here and attended Merrimack College and later earned a Master's degree from Salem State College. He was employed for many years with the State of Mass., DPW, as a civil engineer.
He was a member of the Thomas E. Power K of C 1505 in Danvers, the American Legion and a communicant of St. Mary of the Annunciation Church in Danvers. He enjoyed studying family heritage, square-dancing and camping. Mr. Horgan also worked as a part-time teacher at local colleges. He served his country during the Korean War with the U.S. Navy.
Surviving him are his five children; Kathleen Shea and her husband Joseph of Danvers, Colleen Horgan of Danvers, David Horgan and his wife Karen of Beverly, Kevin Horgan and his wife Petra of Merrimac and Richard Horgan of New Hampshire; also leaving a sister, Helen Vaillancourt and her husband Fred of Danvers, his grandchildren; Michael, Matthew, Joshua, Noah, David, Stephen and Elisabeth Horgan and Emily Pelletier; his great-grandchildren; Rachel MacArthur, Jonathan, Jasmine , Eliza Horgan and David Pelletier; as well as several nieces and nephews.
ARRANGEMENTS: A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday at 9 a.m. in St. Mary of the Annunciation Church, Conant Street, Danvers. Visiting hours on Monday in the Mackey Funeral Home, Danvers, from 5 to 8 p.m. Burial in St. Mary's Cemetery, Beverly. I will always have fond memories of Mr Horgan carrying me home after I fell as a kid in front of his house. As an adult, I will cherish the memories of him with my daughter on Halloween. He was a wonderful man and like a second dad to me. He will be sadly missed by the entire Trefry family.
