Dear Rosemary and Family,

I am sadden to hear of your loss. For many months, I have gotten to know Rosemary through our Disciple classes and can only believe her brother was as a beautiful person like I know Rosemary is. Replace your pain with the wonderful memories of Don and your hearts will be fulfilled with happiest and laughter. God bless you. Cheryl

Don cast a shadow straight and long for who he was and what he did in life. He lived with faith and died with peace. Remembering the good times...

I always admired Uncle Don MacCanon's wit and learned something new from every conversation. He and my next oldest brother had the same birthday.

Dear Julie,Don,Rosemary, Delight,Dick and Families,

My friendship with your Don and Nell spans the years since 1961. I often recall the first time that I met Nell. Our family had moved to Elmhurst and midweek I was looking for a church home. Two women were working on the bulletin when I located Christ United Methodist Church. Nell was one of them. In getting acquainted and learning that Nell was from Iowa, I asked which town. "Oh, you would not know it. It is a small town in southern Iowa." You can only imagine her surprise when after coaxing "Albia" from her to learn that I was reared only a few miles from there and that we had many acquaintances in common.

Shortly thereafter,we met your father. Learning that I had connections in Chariton and Lucas County he asked if I had know any of the Curtis families. After I had named a few he offered that his grandfather Curtis had been a pastor there for several years. Amazed, I responded,"Your grandfather was the pastor who performed the marriage of my parents in February of 1917."

Your grandfather/great-grandfather was a well known and much beloved, most reverend pastor known throughout the county. His legacy lives.

Thirty years later Lee and I moved to West Des Moines. It was at a get-acquainted dinner when we met Rosemary and Bill. Upon learning that we had moved there from Elmhurst, Bill said that Rosemary had a brother who had lived there for years. Interested in making connections I asked the name. Rosemary was hesitant thinking because of the size of the city we would not know him. Imagine the surprise when we learned Don was her brother. Amazed and excited, I said, "And your grandfather Curtis performed the marriage ceremony for my parents."

We bonded. "Bless be the ties that binds our hearts..." Again we are reminded that we cannot know the breadth and depth of our influence, nor the strength that is gained through our friendships and connections. May the ties that bind always strengthen you and your families and carry you through the valley of your loss.

Rosemary, I'm so sorry for your lost. It's true that every man's death diminishes each of us. Unfortunately we only notice that was we grow older. My thoughts will be with you. Love, Jan

To the loved ones of Don MacCanon,Although I had the privilege of spending only afew hours with Don he was visiting his sister Dee, he impressed me so much I wanted to send this note.It is unusuas for a person to leave such a lasting impression in such a short time. It can only mean that Don was a most unusual man. I remember his sit and warmth, and especially his intelligence and insight into the personalities in his world. I can imagine how deeply grieved all of you are, and how deeply you will miss him. My sympathies go out to you. Sincerely, Thayer Culver.
