Donald MACLENNAN Obituary
Brigadier-General (Retired)
On Tuesday, April 24, 2012 in his 93rd year. Beloved husband of the late Laura (Beland). Loving father of Anne Joynt (Tony Going) and Barry MacLennan (Ann Molloy). Grandfather of David and Peter Joynt, and Tory Feyko and Julie MacLennan. Adored brother of Dorothy Ralfs (Jack), Norma MacDowall (Fergus) and the late Nina Jones (Jack). He is survived by many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. A lifelong soldier from the outbreak of WWII. Participated in the invasion of Sicily and the fighting to liberate Italy. Volunteered for duty with United States forces in the Pacific theatre. Awarded U.S. Bronze Star for contribution to liberation of islands in the Sulu Archipelago. Tour of duty in Korean War. Liaison officer in London, England in 1954. Brigade-Major of the Canadian Infantry Brigade Group in Soest Germany. 2IC then Commanding Officer, 1st Battalion, The Black Watch (RHC) based at Camp Aldershot, NS and Werl, Germany (1958-60). Directing Staff member at Canadian Army Staff College, Kingston (1960-62), and at British Army Staff College, Camberley, Surrey, England (1962-64). Director, Land Forces Operational Requirements (Land) (DLFORL) in Ottawa (1964-67). Military Advisor to the Canadian Delegation, International Commission for Control and Supervision, Vientiane, Laos (1967-68). Promoted to Brigadier-General and appointed Commandant, Canadian Land Forces Command and Staff College, Kingston (1969). A private family gathering will be held at a later date. I was a student of his in 1970-71 at the CDN Army Command & Staff College. He was a distinguished soldier with an imposing presence and a clear sense of what the military should be.
