Donald Marshall Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 12, 2024.
Stuart - Donald Robert Marshall, 92, passed away in Stuart, Florida, on October 8, 2024, from complications of Covid-19. With five Stanley Cups under his belt and 19 years in the NHL, Don lived a full and well-rounded life, playing his last round of golf just 3 weeks ago in the beautiful Rocky Mountains of British Columbia, Canada.

Donald was born on March 23, 1932, in Montreal, Quebec, to Dorothy (Taylor) and Samuel Marshall. Predeceased by his wife Betty, he is survived by his four children: Don Marshall (Linda Bain), Cindy Marshall (Dick Molyneaux), Darbie Conibear (Terry Drever), and Susan Marshall (Allan Beech). His six grandchildren (Josée, Emma, Kevin, Kylie, Alex, and Patrick) and his great grand-daughter (Alice), will miss their amiable and equanimous "Grandpa" very much.

Don grew up in Verdun, Quebec, the youngest of three siblings, all predeceased (Brenda and Geoffrey). Nimble and fast on his feet, he played all manner of sport but chose to pursue a career in hockey. Wanting to play with the older boys, he wrapped telephone books around his legs to serve as goalie pads but he soon showed his speed and stick handling skills on the ice and went on to play more forward positions in the NHL. He was a smooth and effortless skater who played in 1176 games, scoring 265 goals and recording 324 assists while racking up only 127 total penalty minutes. He was one of the twelve Montreal Canadiens players who won five consecutive Stanley Cup Championships between 1956 to 1960.

Don met and married Betty Paige Cameron in the mid-fifties, and together raised their four children in Lachine, Quebec. For over 66 years, Don and Betty lived a romance that was full of warmth, love and laughter. After retiring from his post-hockey career in business, they moved to Florida. For over forty years, they enjoyed their summers at Chazy Lake in upstate New York and their winters in Stuart, Florida. These were good years - the sunshine years - the active years that they shared and enjoyed with family and friends.

Don never really seemed to age. Always a gentleman, he was a soft-spoken man who saw the best in others; he lead by example. He loved his children, adored his wife, and delighted in his grandchildren. A fierce competitor, he liked to win but never made a show of it. He met challenges with thoughtfulness and consideration. He taught us how to be good, how to be kind, and how to be generous. He was loved and respected by friends and family alike. He will be missed.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Treasure Coast Hospice Foundation, 1201 SE Indian Street, Stuart, FL 34997, or a hospice foundation of your choice.

Susan was in my fourth grade class in Glen Oaks, Queens when Don was on the Rangers in the early sixties. He came into PS115 on open school week to talk to talk to our class. Wonderful person and family.

Don and Betty became like second parents to me when I moved next to them at River Pines in 1995. We shared many meals at their home, a few with Cindy when she was in town. Also had the pleasure of meeting Don Jr, Susan and Darby. I missed them after I moved to the west coast but visited occasionally. Last time I saw them was before Betty passed. My mom and I met Betty and Cindy at a local restaurant in Stuart. That was a sweet day. I came by when I was in town a couple of times after that but they were probably at their summer home. Will always remember their love for each other, for their kids and grandkids and their kindness to friends and their hospitality.

I was fortunate to have met Don and his family as a nurse in the hospital prior to his passing. He was still tall strong and handsome with a devoted family. Mary Rn

My sincere sympathy to your family. I knew them a very long time ago when they lived in Dorval. I was babysitting, Susan and Darbie at the time, then they moved to Lachine where Don Jr. was born. They were both amazing person. I know your mom passed away a few years ago. Thinking of you in these sad moments. R.I.P.
