Donald Mauldin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 2, 2024.
Dr. Donald Maurice Mauldin, a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather and respected orthopedic surgeon in Dallas, Texas, passed away peacefully on April 24, 2024, at the age of 75 following a ten-month battle with hepatopulmonary syndrome and liver disease. He was born in Austin, Texas, on September 3, 1948, to Martha Jane Rush and Francis Maurice Mauldin, and attended San Marcos High School where he was an All-State Quarterback and was one of six students in the class of 1967 honored for grades above 3.95. Don was a member of Phi Delta Theta at Southern Methodist University where he completed his studies in three years before entering U.T. Southwestern Medical School in 1970. Don married the love of his life, Pamela "Sam" Whitelock Mauldin, in 1972 and they raised their children, Tish and Jason, in Dallas. Though Don loved to play golf, cheer on the SMU Mustangs, and enjoy family time at the lake, at the very top of his list of favorite things was time spent with his four grandchildren, Madison, Harper, Maxwell, and Myles, who thought "Doc" hung the moon. As a dedicated orthopedic surgeon for 50 years, he excelled at his profession with integrity and passion. Ever the entrepreneur, Don helped invent the first orthotic to replace the cumbersome short leg walking cast - now known as the infamous "boot." A collector of friends from every possible walk of life, Don cherished time spent with his San Marcos buddies, Phi Delt brothers from SMU, UT Southwestern classmates, medical partners, golfing and fishing friends, as well as the crew from The Maple Point. Don's kindness, generosity, and steadfast devotion to his friends and family endeared him to all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Martha Jane and Francis "Mo" Mauldin, and is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sam, his daughter Tish Visinsky and her husband Matthew and their daughters Madison and Harper, son Jason Mauldin and his wife Kristina and their sons Maxwell and Myles, as well as his older sister, Mary Kay Story and her husband Herb. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. A memorial service celebrating Don's life will be held at Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church at 4 p.m. on Friday, May 10, 2024. In lieu of flowers, kindly consider a donation to the T. Boone Pickens Center for Hospice and Palliative Care (12467 Merit Drive, Dallas, TX 75251) or Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church (8011 Douglas Avenue, Dallas, TX 75225).

Don and many of his High School friends, started school together at Campus Elementary in San Marcos, TX. I don´t think we shared the same teachers, but we competed fiercely every day on the playground. Don was a good friend to everyone. I was happy to have spent time with Don on fishing trips. Olga and I send Sam and the family our sincerest condolences.

Tosh and family-
I remember when my oldest daughter Lauren was a staff camp counselor and twisted her ankle playing football with our kids. Your father swooped Lauren into his office without hesitation and gave her X-rays, a walking boot and lots of TLC.
His loving manner and big smile made everything better. You are a shining light of his, Tish. So happy to have had that little window of time with him and so honored to call you all my friends. Holding you so tight in prayers.

I met Don through my college classmate Frank Ling. Don and Frank were med students at UT Southwestern. Don, Frank, Don Floyd (fellow med student) and I eventually shared an apartment which we christened "The Club" in the Oak Lawn/Lemmon area of Dallas. Don chose orthopedics as his specialty and was accepted into the residency program at UTSW which my father chaired. Don was in his last residency group. Had my father lived longer, he would have been immensely proud of Don's accomplishments as an orthopedic surgeon. Deepest sympathies to Sam, Tish, Jason and families. RIP, Dr. Mauldin!

Don was a friend of mine and many others here in San Marcos. We would get together and go on fishing trips to Port Aransas with some of our High School Football teammates. Don Would take time out of his busy schedule to visit his Parents regularly here in San Marcos. This guy had a big heart bottom line. Dan, we love you and you will be missed. Ronnie Mendez

I am sad to hear of Don´s passing. He was an inspiration to so many including me. I played on the Rattler golf team with him. He was an excellent golfer and a few years older than me. I looked up to him and he was always helping and encouraging me. We remained friends all these years. I will miss him and offer my condolences to the family.

Don was everyone´s friend. He helped me numerous times with various orthopedic issues, and I never had to wait to see him. A number of years ago while on vacation, I realized I couldn´t continue with a constant knee problem. I call Don and he got me to the top of the list for knee replacement surgery, with one of his associates. We played a lot of golf together, mostly at Preston Trail. Don could hit a drive over 300 yards, and it never was more that 10 feet off the ground. Don was always upbeat, with a great smile whenever I saw him. Everyone who knew Don is going to miss him dearly.
