Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 21, 2005.
Donald S. Robertson, MD Dr. Donald S. Robertson, 87, of Scottsdale passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, July 17, 2005. Dr. Robertson was born in Omaha, Nebraska on January 24, 1918 and was brought up in Duluth, Minnesota and Montreal, Canada. He graduated from The Hill School and Princeton University and received his Medical Degree from Cornell University. He served two tours of duty in the Army Medical Corps and was Chief of Gastroenterology at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver. His training in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology was completed at the University of Colorado where he was subsequently on the clinical faculty. Dr. Robertson practiced gastroenterology in Denver for 18 years and subsequently retired to Scottsdale. After 3 years of retirement he returned to active practice, pursuing a new career in the field of Bariatrics and Nutrition. After training at the Center for Nutrition Research at Harvard's New England Deaconess Hospital, he then founded the Southwest Bariatric Nutrition Center. SM During this 27 year second career; he brought evidence- based clinical medicine to a disorganized but crucial field of medicine: the study and management of obesity. He was certified by the American Society of Bariatric Physicians and served on its board of Trustees. He received numerous national awards for his efforts to help bring bariatric medicine to the mainstream of American medicine. Dr. Robertson was an excellent golfer who won numerous amateur tournaments in Canada and in the United States and was the low amateur in the Canadian Open in 1939. Just as Tiger crossed over the bridge Dr. Robertson left this Earth. With his wife Carol, he wrote the classic book, The Snowbird Diet, (Warner Books 1985). A colleague, commenting on Dr. Robertson's 52-year career in medicine said, "He was a much loved individual who combined professionalism with compassion. He was a man of vision and purpose and enormous dedication." Dr. Robertson is survived by his loving wife Carol of 30 years; his son, Scott; and two grandchildren. Private services will be held. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Dr. Robertson's name to the Ear Foundation of Arizona/Meniere's Research, 3434 W. Anthem, Suite 118, Anthem, AZ 85086. Arrangements entrusted to Messinger Mortuary, Scottsdale.
