Tidwell, Sr. Donald Wayne Tidwell, Sr., passed away Sunday, February 16, 2014. He was born August 19, 1947, and lived in Columbus his 66 years. Donald graduated from West High School in 1965 and Ashland University in 1969. He began his career as a commercial loan officer at City National Bank and later directed the Columbus Chamber of Commerce Business Resource Center. In 1975, he opened Golden Bird Fried Chicken, a neighborhood institution so popular it spanned 3 locations. He spent the rest of his career in construction management, where he worked on numerous projects throughout Ohio. He was a "man of the people" and fought tirelessly for equal rights. Affectionately known as "Big Don," food has always been a way for him to bring family and friends together during holidays and for special meals such as a fish fry, lobster bake, or gourmet pizza party. To Big Don, any meal was an opportunity to have guests. His cooking embodied how to live life: communally, creatively, artistically, thoughtfully and lovingly. Always the entertainer, he will be forever missed. Donald was predeceased by his parents Eugene and Viola Tidwell. He leaves to cherish his memory his life partner, Nancy; siblings, Howard, Roger, Karl (Darnell) and Kenneth (Debbie); children, Donald Jr., Melissa, Nicholas and Nicole; grandson Ethan Bruening; and granddaughter Kaitlyn Tidwell. Service of Memory will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, February 22, 2014 at the New Salem Missionary Baptist Church, 2956 Cleveland Avenue, Columbus, OH 43224. Pastor Keith Troy officiating. The family will receive friends at the church Saturday, 9 a.m. until the start of service. Arrangements entrusted to DIEHL-WHITTAKER FUNERAL SERVICE, 720 E. Long St. To sign the online guestbook, please visit www.diehl-whittaker.com/obit

My sincere condolences to the entire Tidwell Family! May all the beautiful blessings each of us received during Donald's lifespan both professionally and personally be remembered and cherished. We have been truly blessed to have known such a man, he touched so many people in different ways through his good nature, wit, charm, character and common sense. I pray his accomplishments in and around Columbus will be remembered, because I will be one of those who will remember. I am truly thankful and blessed he touched my life, when I lived there. Donald will be one of those Great Angels watching over his loved ones and making sure they do right. May God continue to bless each of you this day and every day! Be thankful for his namesake!
