Donald Turner Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 28, 2014.
Donald Lloyd Turner was born in Richmond, Calif., on Dec. 21, 1937, and died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014, in Seattle, of cancer.
Don was the son of a hardware store clerk and a homemaker and served in the U.S. Navy. He received his bachelor and doctorate degrees in geology from UC Berkeley.
Don, his former wife, Edith Rohde, and their three children came to Fairbanks in 1970, where Don was a professor of geology at University of Alaska Fairbanks until 1988.
Don built and ran the Geophysical Institute's first geochronology lab. His research included summers in remote Alaskan locations with hot springs and the study of oceanic plates under the Cook Islands.
Don retired at age 51 and for 26 years traveled the world cycling through Bali, kayaking in Hawaii and snorkeling in the south Pacific. He explored passions from stained glass and stunt kites to Kripalu yoga and bluegrass music. He was active in the Ballroom Dance Club of Fairbanks and loved photography, cycling, skiing and spending winters in Columbia. Don learned to hunt and fish from his parents and was a consummate outdoorsman, hunting moose and caribou.
His ashes will be spread at Chitina, where he dip net fished every summer with his son, Alec.
Don is survived by his children and their partners, Lia Stuart, Jill and Kellee Crisafulli, Alec Turner and Amanda Bohman, and Isabella Vance; grandsons, Ethan and Colton Stuart and Slate Turner; and granddaughters, Bingjie, Ling and Jade Turner.
He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Scott Stuart; his mother, Katherine Bates Turner; his father, George Raymond Turner; and his sister, Marie Turner Gosling.
A celebration of Don's life will take place in Fairbanks this summer. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity that preserves wilderness, or a charity of your choice.

Just learned of Don's passing from a mutual friend down here in Mexico.Oddly enough, I have been using a Spanish language program that Don recommended. Like many people, I never found time to study Spanish until I got some place where I had to use it. That program sat on the shelf for three years. During that time, whenever Don saw me, he'd humorously remind me that l "needed to take it out of the package to make it work." And you know, he was right about that. Thanks Don for your encouragement. These little kindnesses are often the truest measure of a person's character.

25 years ago when Don retired I met him on a mountain bike group ride. Every year since then we have been on fishing, hunting, canoeing, camping or biking trips together.
He was very much looking forward to my retirement this year so we could do more wilderness trips together.
I'm glad I got to visit him in the Anchorage hospital on his 76th birthday.
He was a great friend.
I miss him very much.

I met Don 3 years ago in his favorite wintering ground, Medellin, Colombia. The last time I saw him was in April 2013. I phone him from Medellin in November and he said he had booked a ticket for Dec. 9 to Medellin, but our getting together was not to happen. Truly very fine man who lived his life to the fullest. A Canadian friend in Medellin.

I met him in 1998, on my first trip to Fairbanks to check it out and decide whether to accept my current position of the UAF French professor. It was Jewish music dance night where Larry Kaplan brought me. Don invited me to dance and I was smitten! I almost took this job because of him so charmed I was by the evening. Since then we danced at the Fairbanks Ballroom Dance Association, and talked too. He had some magic about him, always remaining so seductive and mysterious, and left the impression of a man who always lived precisely as he saw fit, independent, proud spirit. I saw him for the last time on my birthday and now I learned that we actually have the same birthday, December 21! What a man, what a character!

Don, more than anyone I've ever known, lived his passions, while most of us just dream them. He's personally given me the best fishing experiences of my lifetime, and has been instrumental in helping me and others realize many of our dreams through his example.
On my one summer visit to Fairbanks, Don and I flew into a remote lake and fished practically 24 hours a day for big rainbow trout. We ended my stay with a 2-day float and salmon fishing expedition down the Gulkana River.
Don frequently visited us in the San Juan Islands on his trips south. These visits were always anticipated, as he shared his stories and photos of the year's experiences.
Seventy-six seems too young an age to die, but Don certainly packed a huge amount of living into his time on Earth. He will be sorely missed, but the memories of this amazing person will live on.

I feel fortunate to have gone hunting with Don in Montana last year. His insights were always helpful and he was always a friend even through some difficult times. I will always value his acceptance of other people for who they are.

Don was a good friend and a great dancer in several types of dancing including ballroom, swing and contradance. I had the pleasure of dancing with him many times.
I used to hear a lot about his travels, so he was very active, and loved by many people. I'll miss him.

Don was always getting ready for another trip. Did some fishing and hunting along the way with him, and he always had great fun setting up a tidy camp.
In 2000, after finally getting the moose hung up and slogging back to camp in the dark and driving snow, we made dinner with rice, steamed broccoli, and moose. Just laid there in the wet moss and snow and ate ourselves silly. With a little Old Grand Dad and hot water for dessert, we complimented ourselves with a toast that became a tradition; "Gee, it's so good to have staff".

A week of pike fishing on the Nowitna River with Don ranks as some of the best days ever in Alaska. His thoughtful approach to the tasks at hand were always spot on. Whether fishing or shooting or cooking the harvest of Alaska it was always memorable with my friend. You will be missed.

I met Don at the Ballroom Dance Club and quickly learned of all the time and dedication he had given to help create a place where anyone can learn to dance. He was a big advocate of practice, rarely missing if he was in town. He loved fishing where ever he traveled. Don lived life to the fullest.
Thanks for sharing your lust for life, you will be missed.

Don was my thesis advisor back in 1977-1980 when I got my master's degree from UAF. I couldn't have done it without him. I am glad that when I came back to Fairbanks on my book tour in 2012 that I got to catch up with him and tell him that.
