I Remember Prof. Pharand so fondly as he was our coach for our first Jessup moot court competition. I am a grad of LLB 1981 and he had a heavy influence on my career and my focus on international law. Thanks him I entered the foreign service and subsequently worked for UNHCR. He was a great guy, wonderful mentor, and a joyous spirit.

Throughout my career in the Foreign Affairs Legal Branch I had the good fortune to work with giants. Donat was one of them. His contribution, together with that of his friend and colleague, Len Legault, has provided those of us who still work here with a rich and profound legacy. On behalf of the Legal Branch of Global Affairs, sincere condolences to Sylvia and the Pharand family.

It would be hard to think of the Canadian Arctic and International Law without thinking of Donat Pharand. He really was a legend, always full of positive energy. Sincere condolences to his family from a former member of the Legal Bureau at the then DFAIT.

My sincere condolences to Sylvia and to the Pharand family. I originally met Professor Pharand many years ago through another mutual friend, the late Gordon W. Smith. In recent years, Donat and the late Leonard Legault had worked together to enable publication post-humously of Gordon's work "A Historical and Legal Study of Sovereignty in the Canadian North." These three gentlemen and scholars of the north were long-time friends and lovers of fine scotch!! - who contributed immeasurably to the affirmation of Canada's arctic sovereignty. Prof. Donat Pharand was an inspiration and role model to so many Canadian lawyers and law students. I remember him with deepest respect and affection.

When Donat arrived to teach at Ottawa U Common Law faculty in 1959, I arrived as a 1st year student in his class. He was an excellent teacher and a lot of fun and well liked by all. WE met a few times over the years and it was always a pleasure to renew friendships.

Donat was a much respected dear friend of our late Uncle Gordon W. Smith. Donat was instrumental in his advice and advocacy enabling the publishing of Gordon's manuscript on sovereignty in Canada's Arctic. We will miss his steadfast support and interest in this project. Our heartfelt condolences to Sylvia and his family.
