Donna Dugaw Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 26, 2010.
Donna Mary Lund Dugaw died August 23, 2010, in her home in Olympia, surrounded by her family. She touched hundreds of lives through family gatherings, friendships, parish and volunteer activities, devotional practices, and charitable and community contributions. Her generosity, eagerness, energy and quick humor endeared her to many.
Donna was born September 26, 1924, to Otto and Blanche (Patrie) Lund in Eau Claire, WI. After graduating as valedictorian of her high school class, she studied at Misericordia Hospital in Milwaukee, WI, and was capped as a registered nurse with distinction in surgical nursing.
In June 1947, Donna married her one true love, W. J. Dugaw, M.D. of Chehalis, WA, with whom she shared her life until he died in 2006. After a brief residence in Seattle, WA, pursuing their respective medical careers, the couple moved to Lewis County, where they started what became their large family. They lived in Toledo until 1984, when they moved to Eld Inlet, west of Olympia.
Donna is survived by her children and their spouses: Dianne Dugaw of Eugene, OR (Amanda Powell); Catherine Goodman, Sacramento, CA (Bob); Kristine McDonald of Scarborough, Ontario, Canada (Alan); Daniel Dugaw, Olympia, WA (Kathleen); Teresa Anders, Olympia, WA (Craig); Paul Dugaw, Chehalis, WA (Marie); Mary Jo Dugaw, Falls City, WA (David Ketter); Elizabeth Pillers, Waco, TX, (Larry); Anne Dugaw, Costa Mesa, CA (Darius Sarrafi); Matthew Dugaw, Arlington, TX; Michael Dugaw, Kent, WA; Timothy Dugaw, Seattle, WA (Phillipa), as well as 18 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
Donna was well known for her creativity, which included exquisite baking and cooking; oil and water-color painting; and designing stylish clothing, imaginative costumes and the exteriors and interiors of her homes. She devoted herself to supporting her husband and raising her family. She provided an atmosphere of creativity, musical study, cultural enrichment, laughter, energetic play and efficient productivity that embraced her children and their friends. Donna opened her home to anyone in need of a family. As a result, her family included international and boarding school students, as well as her children and all their friends.
Donna dedicated herself to God and the Catholic Church. She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Parish in Toledo for nearly 40 years. There, she taught Christian education, served as organist and choir director, arranged flowers and helped organize wedding receptions and other parish events. After moving to Olympia, she participated in pastoral ministries at St. Peter's Hospital and was an active member of St. Michael Parish. As a member of the Third Order of St. Francis, she was a tireless contributor to her faith communities and served God in all she did.
A celebration of Donna's life will be held on Saturday, August 28th at 10:00 am, at St. Michael Parish's west side church, 1835 Overhulse Road NW, Olympia, WA. A reception will follow. A graveside service will also take place at 3:30 pm on the 28th at St. Francis Xavier Parish, 139 Spencer Road, Toledo, WA 98591.
Remembrances may be made to St. Michael Parish, 1208 11th Avenue SE, Olympia, WA 98501 (www.saintmichaelparish.org); Pope John Paul II High School, 3145 Hogum Road NE, Lacey, WA 98509 (www.saintmichaelparish.org); or St. Luke Productions, P. Dear Dan and all the Dugaw family: What a great lady your mother was and what joy she brought to others. I shall always remember her smiling face and caring ways as she inquired after the lives of others. I just returned from vacation and heard the news. I am sorry I missed the services. She was such a joy to know and I learned a great deal from her. You have been blessed with two great parents and it shows in their children. Peace be with you in this time of letting go and living with your memories.

To all of the Dugaw children, those of you whom I knew and those I didn't, I send my good thoughts and prayers for your loss. I had a wonderful visit with your mom at Ruth Glazes' service. I am so thankful I was there to see her. Both of your parents gave so much of themselves to me after my accident. They were truly God's gift to me and our community. May you all find peace in good memories as will I.

Dave and I are so glad we stopped in to see your mom last December. We had such a lovely visit and it was so great hearing about the kids. We think of her often and the rest of the Dugaw clan that we became so fond of in our brief time in Toledo. Our thoughts and prayers with you all especially Mary Jo, Beth, Anne and Tim, my former students.

Although there were many miles between us here in Wisconsin and Aunt Donna and family in Washington, I still felt comfort and closeness with Aunt Donna on the few occasions that she traveled here to see Dad (Tom Lund).

Our prayers and thoughts go out to all of our cousins and the many members of the family as you remember and cherish all of the wonderful memories you have of your mother. She was a very special woman! The Lund Family

It never ceases to amaze me how big a role our "St Joseph Mothers" had in influencing us and caring for us as part of our upbringing in grade school.

Mrs. Dugaw was one that touched me during that time. I remember her fondly today and will keep her in my thoughts and prayers as she goes to her heavenly reward.

My thought go out to all the Dugaws. I understand your loss. God bless you all.
